In this Spanish lesson we will practice how to give orders, instructions and suggestions using Spanish Imperatives. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Please familiarise yourself with the following words and phrases before listening to the audio below:

Ayuntamiento: Town hall
Allí mismo: right there

Now play the audio to listen a conversation between two people giving instructions on how to get somewhere. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Transcript:

Peter: Perdona ¿Puedes decirme dónde está el ayuntamiento?
Sonia: Sí claro. Ve todo recto y coge la primera calle a la derecha. Luego continúa todo recto y coge la tercera calle a la izquierda.
Peter: Mmmm Lo siento no he entendido muy bien. ¿Cojo la primera a la izquierda y luego la segunda a la derecha?
Sonia: No, no, no, no, no. A ver, escucha. Ve todo recto ¿vale?
Peter: Sí
Sonia: Y coge la primera a la derecha ¿sí?
Peter: Sí, la primera a la derecha.
Sonia:Luego sigue todo recto y coge la tercera, escucha, la tercera a la izquierda.
Peter: Aaahhh vale… La tercera a la…
Sonia: A la izquierda hijo. Coge la tercera a la izquierda. El ayuntamiento está allí mismo, en la esquina.
Peter: Muchas gracias.
Sonia: De nada. Adiós.
