Today we are going to practice comparing the uses and key words of the two Spanish grammar tenses El Pretérito Indefinido and El Pretérito Perfecto.

Comparing El Pretérito Indefinido and El Pretérito Perfecto
1. First, let´s see if you know what these Spanish words and phrases mean:

2. Now, let´s review again what we have just practiced. Please tell me what the following words and phrases are in Spanish:

3. Next, I will say some Spanish words and phrases related to time and I would like you to say if they are used with El Pretérito Indefinido or with El Pretérito Perfecto:

4. Now I will say some sentences in Spanish. I will say each sentence in two different ways – one using El Pretérito Indefinido and one using El Pretérito Perfecto – but only one will be correct. I would like you to tell me which sentence is the correct one:
Esta mañana me levanté a las siete / Esta mañana me he levantado a las siete.
Ayer fui al parque a pasear / Ayer he ido al parque a pasear.
Estuve en Barcelona dos veces / He estado en Barcelona dos veces.
El año pasado María fue a Milán / El año pasado María ha ido a Milán.
Últimamente fuimos mucho al cine / Últimamente hemos ido mucho al cine.
Todavía no comimos / Todavía no hemos comido.
Ya terminé de estudiar / Ya he terminado de estudiar.
Esta semana vi mucho la televisión / Esta semana he visto mucho la televisión.
Nací en 1979 / He nacido en 1979.
Hasta ahora no tuve problemas con mi jefe / Hasta ahora no he tenido problemas con mi jefe.
Ya hemos terminado por hoy.
I hope these activities have helped you to understand better how and when to use El Pretérito Indefinido and when to use El Pretérito Perfecto. When you are talking to someone and you are not sure which one to choose, don´t panic because the other person will understand you even if you choose the wrong option. You will get better and better at this by speaking and listening to native speakers and you will develop a feeling for which is the right tense to use. You also need to know that in some countries in Latin America they tend to use El Pretérito Perfecto very little, so you will hear people saying “Hoy me levanté a las ocho” when in Spain we would say “Hoy me he levantado a las ocho”.
