This is a special post for beginners on how to form the gerund in Spanish.

Regular Verbs

hablar [to speak] – hablando
beber [to drink] – bebiendo
partir [to leave] – partiendo

Special Cases

1. Verbs with ending “yendo”

atraer [to attract] – atrayendo
caer [to fall] – cayendo
contraer [to contract] – contrayendo
creer [to believe] – creyendo
leer [to read] – leyendo
traer [to bring] – trayendo

ir [to go] – yendo

construir [to build] – construyendo
contribuir [to contribute] – contribuyendo
excluir [to exclude] – excluyendo
destruir [to destroy] – destruyendo
huir [to escape] – huyendo
incluir [to include] – incluyendo
influir [to influence] – influyendo
oír [to hear] – oyendo

2. Stem changing forms

advertir [to warn] – advirtiendo
competir [to compete] – compitiendo
conseguir [to get] – consiguiendo
consentir [to allow, to spoil] – consintiendo
convertir [to convert] – convirtiendo
decir [to say] – diciendo
hervir [to boil] – hirviendo
mentir [to lie] – mintiendo
pedir [to ask] – pidiendo
reñir [to fight, to tell off] – riñendo
repetir [to repeat] – repitiendo
seguir [to follow, to keep on] – siguiendo
servir [to serve] – sirviendo
sugerir [to suggest] – sugiriendo
venir [to come] – viniendo
poder [to be able to] – pudiendo
dormir [to sleep] – durmiendo
morir [to die] – muriendo

Examples

Estábamos hablando con nuestro profesor. [We were talking to our teacher.]
Yo estoy haciendo mis deberes. [I’m doing my homework.]
Sigo repitiéndolo, pero no me entiendes. [I keep repeating it, but you don’t understand me.]
Estoy oyendo un ruido raro. [I can hear a strange noise.]
No entiendo lo que me estás diciendo. [I can’t understand what you’re saying to me.]
Ellas están leyendo revistas de moda. [They are reading fashion magazines.]
Llorando nos contaba lo que había sucedido. [Crying, she was telling us what had happened.]
Pensándolo bien, tenemos que hacer algo. [On second thought, we need to do something.]
Vi al ladrón saltando el muro. [I saw the thief jumping over the wall.]
Queriéndolo o no, me vas a decir la verdad ahora mismo. [Whether you want it or not, you’re going to tell me the truth right now.]
