In this Spanish lesson we will practice using Spanish irregular negative imperatives. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

Here are the grammar rules of how to create Spanish irregular negative imperatives:

Oir: no oigas, no oiga, no oigáis, no oigan: Don’t listen
Salir: no salgas, no salga, no salgáis, no salgan: Don’t leave
Hacer: no hagas, no haga, no hagáis, no hagan: Don’t do/Don’t make
Poner: no pongas, no ponga, no pongáis, no pongan: Don’t put
Venir: no vengas, no venga, no vengáis, no vengan: Don’t come
Decir: no digas, no diga, no digáis, no digan: Don’t say/Don’t tell
Tener: no tengas, no tenga, no tengáis, no tengan: Don’t have
Ir: no vayas, no vaya, no vayáis, no vayan: Don’t go

Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Dirección opuesta: opposite direction
Hacer caso: to listen to
No tener ni idea: to not have a clue
Por aquí: this way

Now play the audio to listen a conversation between two people. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Isabel: Hola Mark. ¿Qué tal?
Mark: Bien, pero lo siento, no tengo tiempo de hablar contigo. Tengo mucha prisa.
Isabel: ¿Adónde vas?
Mark: He quedado con mi hermano Paul en la plaza roja y no sé dónde está.
Isabel: Pues no vayas por allí. La plaza roja está en la dirección opuesta.
Mark: ¿En serio? María me ha dicho que está por aquí.
Isabel: No hagas caso a María.
Mark: No digas eso Isabel. Pobre María.
Isabel: No, en serio. María no tiene ni idea de dar direcciones. Yo voy mucho a la plaza roja y sé perfectamente dónde está.
Mark: Bueno, pues voy contigo.
Isabel: No, no, no vengas conmigo. Ahora no voy a la plaza roja. Voy a mi casa. Tengo que estudiar. Es horrible. Odio estudiar.
Mark: No digas eso Isabel. ¿Por qué no vienes conmigo a la plaza roja? Vamos a un bar, tomamos algo y luego te vas a casa a estudiar.
Isabel: Vale venga. Voy contigo.
Mark: ¿Por aquí?
Isabel: Nooo, por aquí.
