¡Hola a todos! ¿Qué tal?

Hoy vamos a ver diferentes expresiones que usamos cuando escribimos en español. You can also use the expressions we are going to see in this class in regular conversation, but many of them sound quite formal and are mostly used when writing.

Estas son las expresiones más básicas, pero tenemos muchas más…

To introduce your ideas you can use these expressions:

• Primero: Firstly
• Segundo: Secondly
• Por un lado/una parte: On one hand
• Por otro lado/otra parte: On the other hand

To develop an idea you can use:

• A continuación: To continue/Continuing
• Luego: Afterwards/Next/Then/Later
• Después: Afterwards/Next/Then/Later
• Más tarde: Afterwards/Later
• Entonces: Then/So

And to finish you can use:

• En conclusión: In conclusion
• Finalmente: Finally
• Por todo ello: For these reasons/For all these reasons/For all of this
• En resumen: In summary/To sum up/Summing up
• En definitiva: In short/In a nutshell
• En suma: All things considered/Taking all into account

To add information:

• Además: Also/Besides/As well/Too/What’s more/Furthermore/Moreover
• También: Also/Too/As well
• Asimismo: Also/Likewise
• Incluso: Even

To contrast ideas:

• Pero: But
• Sin embargo: However
• No obstante: Nevertheless
• En cambio: On the other hand/In contrast
• A pesar de que: Despite/In spite of/Even though
• Aunque: Although/Though

To express cause:

• Debido a: Due to/Because of/As a result of
• Como: As/Since (Ya que: As/Since – when the other person knows the cause)
• Dado que: Given that/Since
• A causa de/Con motivo de: Due to/Because of (Por culpa de: Due to/Because of – less formal)
• Gracias a: Thanks to
• No porque… sino porque: It’s not because …. it’s because

To express consequence:

• De ahí que: So/That’s the reason why
• Tan.. que: So…..that
• Luego: Therefore (Así que: Therefore – less formal)
• Es por esto por lo que: This is why
• Por eso: That’s why

To reformulate ideas:

• O sea: I mean
• Es decir: That is to say
• En otras palabras: In other words
• Dicho de otro modo: In other words

To refer to a previous idea:

• Respecto a: In respect to
• En cuanto a: In respect to
• En relación con: In relation with
• Referente a: In reference to

Bueno, pues esto es todo por hoy.

You now have many useful common expressions to use when you write in Spanish. To help memorise them I recommend that you practice writing about some subjects that you know a lot about and try to use the expressions as you would in your own language. Don´t try to use too many just for the sake of using them, less is sometimes more.

Que tengáis una fantástica semana y nos vemos en la próxima clase con más español.

¡Hasta pronto!
