Kebabpizza in Sweden (Sung to the tune of Cheeseburger in Paradise. Obviously.) Posted by Marcus Cederström on May 6, 2011 in Uncategorized
Sometimes it’s the little things that I miss from Sweden. And they aren’t necessarily Swedish, but just something that I got used to. Like lördagsgodis. Kalles. Snaps. You know, the important things in life.
But as my first year back in school comes to a close, my first year of teaching wraps up, I have found myself eating a lot of frozen pizza. A lot. It’s not something I’m proud of, but it just kind of happened.
All this frozen pizza reminded me of the deliciousness that is a kebabpizza. Just a few years ago, Aftonbladet, obviously at the height of its investigative journalism, announced that Swedes had anointed the kebabpizza the most popular pizza in the country. With good reason. There are few things as delicious as tubed meat shaved into thin slices and spread across a thin crust pizza. Add a little garlic sauce, some peperoncinis and onions and you are set.
No food can be truly judged as delicious until a song has been written in its honor (I’d like to submit Cheeseburger in Paradise as exhibit one). Luckily, the Swedes are well aware of this and in 2008 a song titled Kebabpizza Slivovitza was entered into Melodifestivalen. Surprisngly, it did not advance. Some things are meant to stay inside a country’s borders. Songs about kebabpizza might be one of them.
With all this in mind though, it is no wonder after three years in the country that I yearn for the sweet taste of kebabpizza. While it may not be the food most people consider to be Swedish, it has become a late night staple for Swedes throughout the country. One well worth enjoying the next time you’re in Sweden.
