Crossing the border Posted by on Aug 10, 2011 in Uncategorized

Crossing the border from Canada to the United States is one thing. Crossing the border from Sweden to Norway and vice versa is very much another.

Sweden and Norway have long had many different types of agreements to ease communications between each other. One of these agreements allows Norwegian citizens to enter Sweden freely and without inspection as if entering another part of the same country. The same for Swedish citizens entering Norway. You don’t even need a passport to get in–the countries work together as if they are one.

When taking a plane from Sweden to Norway or vice versa, however, remember that you will need to follow the same check-in and security procedures as you would for any other intereuropean flight. But for people taking trains, buses, and personal vehicles between Norway and Sweden, it is as if they are two provinces of the same country–similar to traveling between the French-speaking and English-speaking parts of Canada.

As you probably already know, Sweden and Norway share more than just a free border. They also share a minimal language difference, similar political views, and even similar clothing styles. Both countries, like many other European countries, also have an abundance of clean, environmentally friendly, and comfortable public transportation for those without personal vehicles. Many people use their bicycles to travel as well–particularly students.

A train from Stockholm to Oslo takes about six hours in total, and a flight closer to 90 minutes. There are also buses available, but due to the amount of time it takes, the trip is likely to take two days. Therefore I recommend taking a train if you’re a sightseer, or a plane if you’d rather get there more quickly. It’s worth the trip either way!
