Generally speaking, a good conversation starter is the weather. And so it can be good to have some good phrases up you sleeve. “Visst är det fint väder idag?” Isn’t it nice weather today? “Fint” is the adjective, but can be substituted for a number of other words as well, depending on what you want…

I understood something important about communication last week. When the polite gym instructor/sales assistant/Tesco cashier/woman in the pub looks at me, nods and says “Alright?”, he or she does NOT expect me to answer “Yes, thank you, how are you?”. This is just another way of saying “Hi there” and he or she is NOT interested…
