I’m a writer. I’m a traveler. I’m a translator. What are you? How would you translate that into Thai?

 

In English, you simply take the verb/noun and add –er to the end (or –or in some cases). In Thai it’s pretty much the same. You simply add nak4 นัก in front of the verb/noun.

 

For example, the word for write is kien5 เขียน. So a writer would be nak4 kien5 นักเขียน. Or for a traveler, the word for travel is tong3 tiew3 ท่องเที่ยว. So a traveler/tourist would be nak4 tong3 tiew3 นักท่องเที่ยว. And the verb for translate is blae1 แปล, giving nak4 blae1 นักแปล for translator.

 

Here are a few more. Just look up the verb/noun to get correct pronunciation, if you are unsure.

นักกฎหมาย Lawyer (noun: law)

นักว่ายน้ำ Swimmer (verb: swim)

นักวิ่ง Runner (verb: run)

นักเทนนิส Tennis player (noun: tennis)

นักถ่ายรูป Photographer (noun: photo)

นักเต้น Dancer (verb: dance)

นักโทษ Prisoner (verb: apologize)

นักรบ Warrior (verb: fight)

นักปัญชี Accountant (noun: account)

นักวิทยาศาสตร์ Scientist (noun: science)

นักเรียน Student (verb: learn)

นักกีฬา Athlete (noun: sport)

นักสืบ Detective (verb: investigate)

นักบิน Pilot (verb: fly)

นักร้อง Singer (verb: sing)

นักตกปลา Fisherman (verb: fish)

นักมวย Thai Boxer (verb: box)

 

In the example above, notice how not all of the English words ended in ‘-er’. This also happens in Thai. For example teacher is NOT nak4 sawn5 นักสอน, but instead it is kruu1 ครู. And นักกฎหมาย is more of the lay-mans way of saying lawyer, while ta4naay1 kwaam1 ทนายความ would be the more formal word. You also wouldn’t use นัก for the various fields of engineering, or for farmers, soldiers, doctors, or police.
