the names of animal sounds Posted by on Jun 30, 2011 in Vocabulary

In this post, I present a list of the names of animal sounds (أسماء أصوات الحيوانات). You can learn the names of the animals if you do not know them from the left and middle columns. The name of the animal sound is presented in the right column. This list in MSA, and there are other names or some variations of these names used in colloquial dialects; e.g. the sound of a fly in MSA is (أزيز), however in Egyptian Arabic, we call it (زن). The same word that is used for the sound of the fly (أزيز) is also used for the sound of the airplane!

Many people who do not know the words that describe the names of animals would just say ‘ the sound of ….’, e.g. ’صوت الحصان‘.

  1. Juan:

    Hello Aziza,

    Really interesting, It is hard for me to learn by heart all these new words but at least I have it all together added to my vocabulary list!.
    This reminds me of two insects that make a lot of noise. I know them from Spain although they must live in all Mediterranean countries and far beyond.
    The cricket, they use to “sing” at night. We use the verb “sing” for birds, crickets etc.

    The other insect is difficult to explain, it sings very loudly during the summer days under the sun, it flies. I think its name is cicada in english.
    How are they called in arabic? and the sound they make?
    Thanks.

    Juan

    • aziza:

      @Juan Ahlan Juan,
      Yes, I know the insect you describe. In Egypt, we call it (صرصار الغيط) literally (the field cockroach) because you find it mainly in the countryside and near plants. I know its distinctive loud sound, but I do not think that we have a special name for the sound, or at least I do not know of one. So, I suggest we say the sound of the cricket (صوت صرصار الغيط)

    شكرا يا أزيزة
