Located just a few hours northeast of Beijing is the city of Chengde in Hebei province. During the Qing Dynasty, the Emperor would come here to escape from the heat of Beijing. One particular Emperor – Qianlong – had two incredible temples built here. One is a replica of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, and the other was built especially for his 70th birthday and a visiting Panchen Lama.

Glad to see Chengde is finally getting some recognition! Anyone interested in Chinese ancient history at all should go there. Or anyone interested in seeing emperor-sized temples and palaces and playgrounds.
Went there about 5 years ago and would recommend getting a tour guide through a travel agency. You can probably still pay a reasonable price for it. The major sites are all pretty spread out and it’s a bit of a drive between them. Our guide showed us a lot of other places not mentioned above that are also well worth going to.
@戴妮克 Thanks for your comment, Nicole. I agree that Chengde is definitely worth a visit. It’s very easy to get to from Beijing, and has tons of history. We only had two days there, so we basically spent one day seeing the temples, and the second day wandering around the Summer Mountain Resort and the downtown area. Our hostel did have arranged tours that looked pretty good, and it is in fact a pretty cheap place to travel to.
