Chinese Zodiac: The Ox Posted by on Jan 24, 2009 in Culture, Vocabulary

Hello Readers!

With Chinese new year coming up, now’s a better time than ever to review the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac!  Today’s topic (and this year’s animal) is the Ox.  We’ll find out later about how the Mouse is actually the first animal of the Chinese zodiac, but like other people who were born in the Year of the Ox, I can be a bit 固执(stubborn).

So who are the oxen?

People born in the year of the (ox) are known to be 努力 (hardworking) and 勤勉 (diligent) and have 稳定 (stable) 性格 (personalities).  Moreover, they have a strong 责任感 (sense of responsibility), they are also 踏实(practical).  People born in this year are also said to have their biggest success in their 晚年(late years), but that’s not a dealbreaker because oxen are known to be 耐心 (patient) as well.  So who is a famous example of an Ox?  For one, Barack Obama!

Check to see if you were born in the year of the Ox:

1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, or 2021[for the time travellers among us]

Remember that if your birthday is in January or February that you may actually have been born in the previous zodiac year.  Next topic: the Tiger!
