Summer is slowly approaching. However, these past two weeks have been rainy, very windy, cold… Nothing you would expect from a great summer!
So while we are reviving the cold winter months with blankets and hot chocolates, why also not some cozy Dutch? Let’s start off with the first Triple L! (Language Listening Lesson)

Het Verhaal van Mark
Mark is 17 jaar oud en woont in Assen, de hoofdstad van de provincie Drenthe. Hij zit op het gymnasium in het examenjaar. Hij heeft nu eindexamens.
De afgelopen dagen heeft het hard geregend en zelfs gehageld. En dan al die examens! Mark heeft er genoeg van. Hij wil eindelijk op vakantie. In de zomervakantie gaat Mark met een paar vrienden naar Lloret Del Mar in Spanje om goed bij te komen van al dat leren. Daar heeft hij al heel veel zin in!
Helaas kan hij nog niet weg. Eerst nog die examens maken! Maandag heeft Mark het examen geschiedenis. Dat wordt nog leren, leren, leren! Op dinsdag natuurlijk nog wiskunde. Hij heeft er een ontzettende hekel aan, maar het moet maar. Vrijdag is het laatste examen, latijn. En dan eindelijk vakantie!

The approximate translation:
Mark is 17 years old and lives in Assen, the capital of the province Drenthe. He attends the gymnasium (the most advanced level of the Dutch school system) and is in his senior year. He has final exams right now.
The last days it has rained hard and even hailed. Mark had enough of it. He finally wants to go on holiday. In the summer holidays, Mark is going to visit Lloret Del Mar in Spain with a few friends to recover from al the studying. He is really looking forward to that!
Unfortunately, he cannot leave yet. Those exams come first! Monday, Mark has the History exam. That is going to be studying, studying, studying! On Tuesday he will have Math of course. He absolutely detests it, but he has no choice. Then on Friday is the last exam, Latin. And then finally, holidays!

Goeie dag, Sten, Ik spreek Nederlands redelijk goed maar natuurlijk bin ik nooit tevrede met mijn taal kennis. Ik hoop u sal tijd vinden om mijn vouten te Koregeren. Ik zou het veel waarderen.
Ik heb eigenlijk aan uwe blog gekommen door het Duitse blog, omdat ik bin besig ook met het Duitse leren. Mijn moeder taal is eigenlijk Engels, dat komt omdat ik was in Suid Afrika geboren en daar waaren alemal in twee taal groepen gedeelt en ik was in het Engelse taal groep.
Nu woon ik in Israel en werk als een rijsgids meestal met Nederlanders.

Ik ben eigenlijk (as in überhaupt? – then you can also just use the German word. Its recognized in the Netherlands too!) aan uw blog gekomen door het Duitse blog, omdat ik ook bezig ben met Duits leren. Mijn moedertaal is eigenlijk Engels, omdat ik in Zuid-Afrika ben geboren en daar was iedereen in twee taalgroepen opgedeeld en ik was in de Engelse groep.
Nu woon ik in Israël en werk als een reisgids meestal met Nederlanders.

As you may have noticed, many words that as you know them end with an e when you speak them, officially still have an -n at the end in Dutch (e.g. groete = groeten). It is in everyday language not pronounced much anymore, so we do say groete, but in writing it still is groeten.
On many occasions you used the s instead of a z. Often when a word starts with an s-, or there is an -s- in the middle of a word, and vowels come right after that, you write it with a z-. (e.g.: sal = zal; besig = bezig; 7 = zeven, but schoon; stoppen, etc.).
And do not forget: bin = ben. That is the basic stuff! Keep it up!!!
