Yesterday I wrote a post about Girl Scouts (also called ‘Girl Guides’) in commemoration of National Girl Scouts Day in the United States, but I neglected to mention s’mores, which is a famous campfire treat invented by Girl Scouts!  Today I will try to make up for my oversight yesterday by telling you all about this delicious food and presenting a video that tells you how to make s’mores!

S’more (which is sometimes also spelled ‘smore’) is a contraction* of the phrase “some more.”  Why is this snack called s’more? Because people love to eat it so much they always want “some more”!  S’mores are a traditional nighttime campfire treat to eat while camping. So, you might be asking yourself what exactly is a s’more?  (It is pictured above.)  A s’more consists of a roasted** marshmallow and a piece of chocolate that are sandwiched between two pieces of graham crackers.  That is it. S’mores are very simple and amazingly tasty.

The first recorded version of a recipe for s’mores is found in the publication, Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts, a book that was published for Girl Scouts in 1927. The person credited as inventing s’mores is Loretta Scott Crew.  It is reported that she used to make s’mores by the campfire for her Girl Scout troop and they all asked for “some more” please.

Below is a step by step video for how to make s’mores.  Even though they are usually made around a camp fire, they can be made over any fire, or even in a microwave.  So, even if you are not going camping any time soon you can try making this classic American camping treat at home.
