Expressing opinion Posted by on Oct 10, 2013 in English Language

There are many expressions we use in English to share our different opinions, such as expressing strong or neutral opinions. If you feel very strongly about a subject, you are probably going to express your opinion in a very strong way, with strong language, but if you are uncertain or unsure about something you will probably use less strong, or neutral words and expressions. Below are some expressions that can be used, on their own or as opening phrases, to express opinions in English. Take note of which phrases are used to express strong opinions and which are more neutral expressions.

Phrases to express strong opinion:
That is completely and utterly ridiculous.
Are you joking? or Are you kidding?
To be perfectly frank, _______
Without a shadow of a doubt, _______
I really don’t think _______ or I really do think ________
Nonsense.
Absolutely.
I’m positive that _________
Quite the opposite…
I definitely agree/disagree…

Now, here are some examples of these expressions used in context:
That is completely and utterly ridiculous. You can’t seriously think we are going to spend that much money on a new car.
Without a shadow of a doubt the Boston Red Sox are a better team than the New York Yankees.
I definitely agree with your plan. It is the best plan I have heard all day.

Phrases to express a neutral opinion:
I’m not on the same page as you on this, ________
I don’t think so.
I’m no expert on this, but_________
Fair enough.
I can accept that.

And here are some examples of these used in context:
I’m not on the same page as you on this, but I can see where you are coming from with your opinion.
I’m no expert on this, but I think that you are putting that together upside down.
Even though I don’t fully agree, I can accept that.

Now, let me ask you about your opinion. Is learning the English language important in today’s world?
