In sports news: A family football game Posted by Gabriele on Jan 31, 2013 in Culture
This coming weekend is the biggest game in American football, the Super Bowl! Football is one of American’s favorite sports. The football season that runs from September to the beginning of February every year takes over many American’s lives. During this season 32 different professional football teams play each other in games every Sunday (and there are also a few weekday games each week). Sundays during football season, become known as “Football Sunday” and “Game Day.” Millions of Americans watch football games on Sundays. The biggest Sunday of the season is “Super Bowl Sunday” and this upcoming Super Bowl Sunday has an added twist that is going to make the game even more interesting and exciting for many people to watch.
The two teams playing in the Super Bowl this year are the Baltimore Ravens (ravens are a type of black bird) and the San Francisco 49ers (“49ers” was the name given to men who traveled from around the world to San Francisco, California in 1849 during the California gold rush. These were men searching for gold). Here is where the interesting twist comes in. The two men who coach these two teams in the Super Bowl this year are brothers; there names are Jim Harbaugh and John Harbaugh. These brothers are also the sons of a lifelong football coach. Obviously football was very important in the Harbaugh family! This is the first time in history that two brothers will coach against each other in the Super Bowl. Some Americans are even calling this the “Brother Bowl” for that reason. Other people are talking about this game as “Harbaugh vs. Harbaugh” not ‘Ravens vs. 49ers’.
For people who don’t care much about football this unique coaching situation gives them something different to watch and cheer for this Sunday. Who would you cheer for the older brother or the younger brother? The way you answer that question likely says something about whether you are an older or a younger sibling. In this case John, the coach of the Baltimore Ravens, is the older brother and Jim, the coach of the 49ers, is younger. So, even if you are not interested in football, maybe this year your will watch this game just to see how this interesting family feud works out.
