New Year’s resolutions Posted by on Jan 1, 2013 in Culture

The new year is a time for reflecting on the past, including old habits, and thinking about the future, including making new goals.  It is a common tradition for people around the world to make New Year’s resolutions* on the first of January, which happens to be today!  A New Year’s resolution is a commitment that a person makes to themselves and others to change their ways. People make resolutions all the time, of course, but at the beginning of a new year people often feel more energetic and excited about making changes. So, what type of resolutions do people usually make?  Here is a short list of the type of resolutions Americans generally make:

  • Exercise more
  • Eat healthier food
  • Lose weight
  • Save more money
  • Quit smoking
  • Go back to school or study more

These are very general resolutions, and it is more common for people to make more specific resolutions.  Having a more specific goal is also helpful in being able to accomplish that goal!  I’ve put together some specific English language learning goals for 2013 that you might want to look through and choose from (or modify**) to fit your language learning objectives.

English language learning resolutions:

  • Spend 1 hour every day studying English
  • Speak in English for at least 20 minutes everyday
  • Try the Transparent Language Which is English? game
  • Learn and use one new English word everyday
  • Read an entire book in English
  • Check out the Transparent Language English Facebook page regularly to learn new English words and practice reading in English
  • Always count (use numbers) in English
  • Find a native English speaker and make a weekly language exchange “date” (where you get to practice your English and the other person practices speaking with you in your native language)
  • Start saving money to take short trip to an English speaking country for an immersion experience
  • Read the Transparent English Language Blog at least 2 times a week

As you make your New Year’s resolutions for 2013, don’t forget about you English language learning resolutions and that Transparent Language is here to help you meet your goals!

* resolutions = a formal decision to do something
** to modify = to make a small change to something, to transform
