Young Ones Posted by on Feb 1, 2012 in English Grammar, English Language, English Vocabulary

With all this cold and snowy weather that many places are having, it might seem like a strange time to be thinking about babies.  Usually spring is the season for that.  But just this weekend one of my friends had a new baby, so I thought it might be the perfect time to review the English names of young animals and creatures.

Since we are on the topic of human babies, let’s start there and then move onto some of the animals:

  • A young person is called a child (or a baby is a really, really young person!).
  • A young cat is called a kitten.
  • A young cow is called a calf.
  • A young goose is called a gosling.
  • A young hen is called a chick.
  • A young dog is called a puppy.
  • A young pig is called a piglet.

Why don’t you have a go by thinking of five animals or creatures that you are not certain of the word for their young and do some research online or using a reference book.

If you want to take the practise even further, why not look up in a thesaurus some adjectives that mean very small.  Remember, an adjective is a describing word and a really good post about adjectives can be found here.

After you have found the names of some young animals and some adjectives that mean very small, go ahead and put them together to see what sentences you can make.
