Putting Your French Face On: Makeup Vocab Posted by on Apr 23, 2010 in Culture, People, Vocabulary

Évidemment (obviously), le maquillage (makeup) n’est pas nécessaire. But it’s fun to play with, and it’s one of the places you’re most likely to see French every day: Check your lip gloss. Does it also say “gloss à lèvres”? I learned a lot of the vocabulaire de maquillage from reading les emballages (the packaging) des produits de beauté (of beauty products).

Je ne me maquille pas beaucoup (I don’t wear a lot of makeup), mais j’aime bien (but I like):

le gloss à lèvres: lip gloss (especially le gloss repulpant: lip-plumping gloss!)

le fard à paupières: eyeshadow

le mascara

l’eyeliner

la poudre bronzante: bronzer

le blush

There are other soins (treatments) besides makeup, of course. Pour la peau hydratatée (for moisturized skin), you might want une crème hydratante. If you don’t get enough sommeil réparateur (beauty sleep), un soin contour des yeux (eye cream) could help. Je viens d’essayer (I just tried) un échantillon (a sample) d’un soin réparateur pour le contour des yeux. It’s amazing! Je suis trop fan maintenant: I’m a huge fan now.

Besides makeup, are there other soins de beauté (beauty treatments) you’re devoted to? Moi, j’adore me faire les ongles: I love getting my nails done.

Here’s a line from le site web of Yves Rocher, un institut de beauté en France. It describes their Grand soin des mains. Can you understand it?

Les ongles sont taillés, limés puis polis. Une touche de couleur ou une French manucure pour finir avec des mains de rêve.”

My translation would be, “Nails are trimmed, filed, then polished. A touch of color or a French manicure to finish with the hands of your dreams”… more or less. Visit their website and see how many treatments you understand! Yves Rocher Soins en Institut

Yves Rocher is a sort of mid-level salon chain, with all kinds of soins: masques, gommages, épilation… Waxing, or épilation, is something you want to make sure you absolutely have the right vocabulary for, or you could end up very surprised.

épilation demi-jambes/jambes entières: half-leg/full leg wax

épilation sourcils: eyebrows

épilation lèvres: lip

épilation maillot: bikini wax

épilation maillot brésilien: …

épilation aisselles: under-arms

Why don’t you practice saying les noms des produits de beauté the next time that you faire sa toilette? Speaking of which—je dois filer à une soirée! I’m dashing to a party! Bon week-end!!
