Ah, February. For many, it means another cold few weeks (Thanks, Punxsutawney Phil), but luckily on the west coast, we’re experiencing some record-breaking highs, and I’m quite ok with that! Whether you’ll be celebrating it bundled up or in shorts, the holiday for lovers is right around the corner, and it’s not always a happy time for everyone.

Even though I loved handing out and receiving Valentine’s Day cards as a child, I never cared much for the concept of the holiday. Chocolates, flowers, and an evening at a restaurant with your partner should happen all year, not just February 14th. What are you supposed to do if you’re single on Valentine’s Day? There’s been a bit of movement out the past few years known as Singles Awareness Day (S.A.D.), and the idea is anti-Valentine’s Day. Why do you need a partner to complete yourself? There’s plenty of joy in being single, and S.A.D. is a silly way to celebrate being alone.

Despite meaning to be funny, the holiday’s acronym can indeed be accurate. Being single isn’t always the most comforting feeling – especially if it’s after a fresh break up. Doubts, old memories, distress, and anxiety accompany you throughout your days and nights. It’s impossible to escape your ex when you’ve lived your life with this person. The first few weeks are the toughest, and the song we’re looking at today examines that thought process.

Louane is a 21-year-old French singer hailing from Hénin-Beaumont in the department of Pas-de-Calais. Her breakthrough came in 2013 when she auditioned for the second season of The Voice: la plus belle voix (The Prettiest Voice). On the show, she sang a mix of English pop songs and traditional French pieces but was eliminated in the semi-finals.

After The Voice, she starred in the film La Famille Bélier for which she was awarded the Most Promising Actress at the Césars. In 2015, her debut album “Chambre 12” was released to success, and most recently, she provided vocals for the track “It Won’t Kill Ya” by The Chainsmokers.

Ready to relive those awful feelings you have thinking about an ex? Grab a tissue and let’s go!

Parfois je pense à toi,
Sometimes I think of you
Dans les voitures
While I’m in the car
Le pire, c’est le voyage,
The worst part is the journey
C’est d’aventure
It’s the adventure
Une chanson fait revivre un souvenir,
A song brings back a memory
Les questions sans réponse,
Unanswered questions
Ça, c’est le pire
Are the worst

Est-ce que tu m’entends ?
Do you hear me?
Est-ce que tu me vois ?
Do you see me?
Qu’est-ce que tu dirais, toi,
What would you say
Si t’étais là ?
If you were here?
Est-ce que ce sont des signes que tu m’envois ?
Are these signs that you’re sending me?
Qu’est-ce que tu ferais, toi,
What would you do
Si t’étais là ?
If you were here?

Je me raconte des histoires,
I tell myself stories
Pour m’endormir
To go to sleep
Pour endormir ma peine,
To put my pain to sleep
Et pour sourire
And to be able to smile
J’ai des conversations imaginaires
I have imaginary conversations
Avec des gens qui ne sont pas sur la terre
With people who aren’t on earth

Est-ce que tu m’entends ?
Do you hear me?
Est-ce que tu me vois ?
Do you see me?
Qu’est-ce que tu dirais, toi,
What would you say
Si t’étais là ?
If you were here?
Est-ce que ce sont des signes que tu m’envois ?
Are these signs you’re sending me?
Qu’est-ce que tu ferais, toi,
What would you do
Si t’étais là ?
If you were here?

Je m’en fous si on a peur
I don’t care if we’re scared
Que je tienne pas le coup
That I can’t cope
Je sais que t’es là pas loin,
I know you’re there, not far
Même si c’est fou
Even if it’s crazy
Les fous c’est fait pour faire fondre les armures
Crazy people make armor melt away
Pour faire pleurer les gens
To make people cry
Dans les voitures
In cars

Est-ce que tu m’entends?
Do you hear me?
Est-ce que tu me vois ?
Do you see me?
Qu’est-ce que tu dirais, toi,
What would you do
Si t’étais là ?
If you were here?
Est-ce que ce sont des signes que tu m’envoies ?
Are these signs you’re sending me?
Qu’est-ce que tu ferais, toi,
What would you do
Si t’étais là ?
If you were here?
