Les virelangues, tongue twisters, are an excellent way to practice your language skills.

 

They help with pronunciation, clear and quick speech, as well as your confidence. When practicing the following virelangues, remember they are even hard for French native speakers. Don’t feel dismayed, and keep practicing for fun!

Je suis ce que je suis, et si je suis ce que je suis, qu’est-ce que je suis ?

I am what I am, and if I am what I am, what am I?

Cinq chiens chassent six chats.

5 dogs hunt five cats.

Si mon tonton tond ton tonton, ton tonton sera tondu.

If my uncle shaves your uncle, your uncle will be shaven.

Ces six saucissons-secs-ci sont si secs qu’on ne sait si s’en sont.

These six dried sausages are so dry that we don’t know if they are.

As-tu vu le vert ver allant vers le verre en verre vert ?

Did you see the green worm going towards the green glass glass ?

Les chaussettes de l’archiduchesse, sont-elles sèches ? Archi-sèches.

The archduchesses socks: are they dry? Very dry.

Ces cerises sont si sûres qu’on ne sait pas si c’en sont.

These cherries are so sour, we’re not sure if they are (cherries).

Un chasseur sachant chasser chasse sans son chien.

A hunter who knows how to hunt hunts without his dog.

    Six-cents-six Suisses suçant six-cents-six saucisses, dont six en sauce et six-cent sans sauce = 606 Swiss men sucking on 606 sausages, of which 6 are with sauce and 600 without.

    Natacha n’attacha pas son chat Pacha qui s’échappa; ce qui fâcha Sacha qui chassa Natacha = Natacha didn’t tie her cat Pacha who escaped; this angered Sacha who fired Natacha.

    Panier / Piano = basket / piano (equivalent or Red lorry / Yellow lorry to be repeated again and again)
