The French-Dubbed Cartoon That Inspired Zidane to Become a World Champion! Posted by on Mar 12, 2012 in Music, Vocabulary

Wherever you lived on the planet, if you’re old enough to remember les années 90 (the 90’s), then you can’t have missed it on TV: The French call it “Olive et Tom“; Spanish people call it Campeones: Oliver y Benji“; the Portuguese and Brazilians know it as “Capitão Falcão“; in Italian, it’s “Holly e Benji“; in Arabic, it’s “Captain Majed“; in German, it’s called “Die tollen Fußballstars“; in Polish, “Captain Hawk“; and in the version originale, it’s titled “Captain Tsubasa”!

This dessin animé (cartoon) has in fact inspired countless of real-world champions of le football, including Del Piero and Zidane.

Olive et Tom is mainly the story of a young boy from le Japon (Japan), who is still in elementary school. He loves le foot with an unrelenting passion, and his rêve ultime (ultimate dream) is, un jour (one day), to lift the trophee of the World Cup for his country.

As it is often the case, before “Olive et Tom” was turned into a cartoon, it was originally une bande dessinée (a comic strip.)

Les caractères principaux (the main characters) of this saga footballistique are:

* OlivierNicknamed “Olive”, he is the undisputed héro.

TomHis nom complet (full name) is Thomas Price, le gardien de but (the goalkeeper) of Olivier’s team.

* Marc Landers: He is le grand rival, if not the arch nemesis, of Olivier, famous for his powerful “tir du tigre” (tiger shot.)

Warner: Marc Landers’ goalkeeper, who’s definitely not easy to score against.

* Roberto: Roberto is Brazilian. Once upon a time, he played for the national team of his country, the “Seleção.“Now that he can’t play anymore, he has Olivier as his protégé.

Let’s now go to have un petit tour du monde (a small trip around the world), comparing the different intros of this cartoon between the different countries:

– First, en espagnol, “Oliver y Benji“:

– Then en italien, “Holly e Benji”:

Notice that when Italians listen to the music of the French and Spanish version, they recognize something completely different: The music of a totally different cartooon: Arsène Lupin!

 (Look):

Arsène Lupin

– En arabe, it’s called “Captain Majed:

– En allemand (in German), it’s “Die tollen Fußballstars“:

Comme vous pouvez le remarquer facilement (As you can easily notice), the German version is the closest to the original Japanese theme:

* * *

Finally, here are les paroles (the lyrics) in French. Maybe you can tell us how you find it in comparison with the other versions?

Tom Olivier
Sont super entraînés
Tom Olivier
Ils sont venus pour gagner

Olive et Tom
Ils sont toujours en forme
Tom Olivier
Sont super entraînés
Tom Olivier
Ils sont venus pour gagner
Car il faut battre le goal

Olive et Tom
Olive et Tom
Olive et Tom

Olive et Tom
Ils sont toujours en forme
Tom Olivier
Sont super entrainés
Olive et Tom
Ils sont venus pour gagner !
