Hallo! Wie geht’s?
Did you have the opportunity to watch “Otto und das Reich?” (Otto and the kingdom.)Ich habe die Sendung gesehen und es war einfach hervorragend (outstanding). I have a much better understanding of how the Germans came to be. Of course this was only episode 1, so I hope you‘ll join me when we are ready to move on to episode 2.
When I ask you to view a movie in German, I have 2 goals in mind:
- Erstens (first), as you listen to German, you learn to distinguish among different sounds, and short sequences of sounds that correspond to words, or parts of words. Was soll das heißen? It means that the more German you expose yourself to, the easier it will become. Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything, you don’t need too. Take small steps, but be consistent.
- Zweitens (second), writing down 5-10 words, and looking up the definitions will build your vocabulary. Would you like to share some of them?
Lass uns ein bisschen über die Sendung sprechen (let’s talk about the movie.) Now that you’ve seen it, I’d like you to go back and watch the first 10 minutes. As you follow along, listen for the sentences I’ve transcribed for you. Practice reading them aloud first, then listen for them in the movie. If you are up for it, press rewind and practice repeating them, one at the time. If the sentences below are too overwhelming for you, just focus on your 5-10 words by keeping count every time you hear them.
Otto und das Reich (first 10 minutes):
- Wer sind wir? – Who are we?
- Woher kommen wir? – Where do we come from?
- Lasst sie kommen! – Let them come!
- Habt Mut! – Be brave!
- Da sieh, sieh… – There look, look…
- Welche Freude…das du gekommen bist – What a joy…that you came
- Ich warne dich… – I am warning you…
- Vergiss das nie! – Don’t ever forget!
- Deine Freunde sind meine Freunde… – Your friends are my friends…
- Deine Feinde sind meine Feinde – …Your enemies are my enemies
- Wenn euch diese Wahl gefallt, erhebt die rechte Hand zum Himmel – If you agree with this choice, raise your right hand towards heaven
- Und niemals möge dein Haut ohne das Öl der Barmherzichkeit sein – Your skin may never be without the Oil of Mercy
- Was hat er vor? – What does he think he‘s doing?
- Das ist der Thron eines Kaisers, nicht eines Königs! – This is the throne of an Emperor, not a King!

Hi Nathalie,
ich habe doch die Sendung gesehen, die mich schön gefällt; wunderbar!
I found a few words and phrases to record; mostly from the first 10 minutes or so as you suggested. ObwohI ich die ganze Sendung noch zwei mal geshen haben!
Here is my vocabulary list:
Er teilte das Land nicht unter seinen Söhnen auf. – He didn’t apportion the country among his sons.
Um die Herrschaft dauerhaft zu sichern. – In order to durably secure the reign.
Nur eine sollte König werden. – Only one should become king.
Deine Zukunft ist noch ungewiss. – Your future still is uncertain.
Die Geschichte der Deutschen kann mann hier beginnen lassen. – The history of the Germans can let man begun here.
Er wie Stammvater um die Deutschen und Franzosen verehrt wird. – He is admired as the progenitor of the Germans and French.
Im Jahr 843 teilten seine Enkel das Frankenreich auf. – In the year 843 his grandsons apportioned the Franconian empire.
Hervorgehen. – Emerges.
I guess my translations may not be 100%, but I enjoyed the video and gained a lot from it. A lot of the information was new to me and that was good, for sure.
Tschuss,
Iain

Hallo Iain, das hast du sehr gut gemacht! I can tell that your listening skills are pretty advanced based on the German sentences you wrote. Es freut mich dass dir die Sendung gefallen hat, it is definitely very informative.
Helen:
hello, Nathalie..I’m so disappointed! I can get as far as “The Thousand Years “overall title, but I can’t get “Otto”. Could you possibly help? I’m certainly not a PC expert, but I’d love to join in this marvellous learning experience. Thanks, Helen.
Janhavi:

mächtiger Kaiser = powerful emperor
germanische Stimme = in this case I guess it was like German majority
Christenheit = Christendom
zum Kampf kommen = something lead to a fight
tödliche Waffe = deathly weapons
zum Vorbild sehen = to consider someone as one’s role model
Ehebund = bond of matrimony
Kaiserreich = empire
Ungarn = Hungary
Erhebung = revolt
Nathalie:
Hi Helen, I am sorry to hear you are having trouble getting to “Otto.” Try this, if you got to the main page, you should see the timeline on the bottom of the screen. On the left, the beginning of the timeline, there is a bull’s eye with 2 arrows; one points to the right, the other points to the top, click on the arrow that points up 2X and then click on the picture that will glide towards you. This should start it for you. Let me know if it works.
Matan:
Hello Nathalie,
I watched the first 10 minutes. I understood only little parts as I’m only a begginer.
Now don’t you have a mistake with the word “mercy”… shouldn’t it be written “Barmherzigkeit”?
Nathalie:
Hallo Matan, I am happy to hear you decided to watch part of the movie.
As far as the German word for “mercy” goes, that’s up for debate. I have seen it written both ways, so my guess would be that either spelling is okay.
