This is a grammar quiz about the Subjunctive mood. It’s suitable to A2-B1 students. Select which of the two statements (A or B) is the correct statement for the situation described. 1. Your six-year old Greek niece is learning to write. She says:
Α. Μαθαίνω να γράφω. (Matheno na grafo)
Β. Μαθαίνω να γράψω. (Matheno na grapso)
2. You are watching a video about the Mediterranean diet. A dietitian is talking about the benefits one can get by drinking red wine. They say:
Α. Είναι ωφέλιμο να πίνει κανείς κρασί. (Einai ofelimo na pinei kaneis krasi)
Β. Είναι ωφέλιμο να πιει κανείς κρασί. (Einai ofelimo na piei kaneis krasi)
3. Your Greek alter-ego invited you to their aunt’s birthday party but you cannot go because you have to work until late. You say:
Α. Δεν μπορώ απόψε. Πρέπει να δουλεύω μέχρι αργά. (Den boro apopse. Prepei na doulevo mehri arga)
Β. Δεν μπορώ απόψε. Πρέπει να δουλέψω μέχρι αργά. (Den boro appose. Prepei na doulepso mehri arga)
4. Your Greek grandfather has decided to lower their high cholesterol. They say:
Α. Δεν πρέπει να τρώω λιπαρά. (Den prepei na troo lipara)

5. You’re writing an email to your Greek cousins and want to end it with a phrase like “I really want to see you next summer”:

6. You’re at the beach. After having spent more than three hours listening to music and reading, you decide it’s time to swim. You’re asking your friend to join you:

7. You are in Greece and want to go to the clubs every night but your Greek friends cannot afford to go with you every night. They say:

8. You’re asking your friend if they want to play τάβλι (tavli, backgammons) with you:

9. Your Greek friends invited you for lunch but you cannot go because you have to take your cat to the vet. You say:

10. A friend of yours wants to know if you go to the islands by plane or by ship. You like travelling by ship, so you say:

I hope the use of the s.m. is clear. It’s one of the most challenging grammar topics and I’ve met foreigners who speak Greek fluently but still use the s.m in a wrong way.
You can repeat the quiz in a few weeks to see if you give the same answers.
