There are seven days until Christmas and in Athens the temperature is nine degrees Celcius., i.e. it’s freezing cold.
The weather has been people’s favorite topic of conversation in the last days.
There are many standard phrases about cold that most learners are familiar with:
1. Κάνει κρύο (kani krio)= it’s cold.
2. Κρυώνω (kriono)= to be cold
Να κλείσω το παράθυρο; Κρυώνω! (Na kliso to parathiro? Kriono!)
Shall I close the window? I’m cold!
The past tense is κρύωσα (kriosa) and it means to catch a cold
Δεν πήγα στη δουλειά γιατί κρύωσα. (Den piga sti doulia giati kriosa)
I didn’t go to work because I have a cold.
3. Κρυωμένος, κρυωμένη, κρυωμένο (kriomenos, kriomeni, kriomeno)= to have a cold (adjective)
The verb κρυολογώ (kriologo) has the same meaning.
Η Σοφία βήχει. Έχει κρυώσει. (I Sophia vihi. Ehi kriosi)
Sophia is coughing. She has a cold.
4. Κρυολόγημα (το) (kriologima) = cold, flu
Ο Πέτρος κρυολόγησε.Έχει πυρετό και είναι στο κρεβάτι. (O Petros kriologise. Ehei pireto kai ine sto krevati)
Petros caught a cold. He has fever and is in bed.
Cold Idioms
1. Η εκδίκηση είναι ένα πιάτο που τρώγεται κρύο (I ekdikisi ine ena piato pou trogete krio)
Revenge is a dish best served cold.
2. Δε μου κάνει ούτε κρύο ούτε ζέστη (De mou kani oute krio oute zesti)= it makes no odds
«Ποια ταινία θέλεις να δούμε; Αυτή ή την άλλη;» « Δε μου κάνει ούτε κρύο, ούτε ζέστη.» (Pia tenia thelis na doume? Afti i tin alli? De mou kani oute krio oute zesti.)
“Which movie would you like to watch? This one or that one?” “ It makes no odds.”
3. Κρυάδα (kriada)
– Έχω κρυάδες (eho kriades) =Ι have the chills.
Νομίζω ότι έχω πυρετό. Έχω κρυάδες. (Nomizo oti eho pireto. Eho kriades)
I think I have fever. I have the chills.
– Παίρνω μια / την κρυάδα (perno mia / tin kriada) = to be disappointed / to have a shock
Ο Νίκος πήρε μια κρυάδα όταν είδε τους βαθμούς του. (O Nikos pire mia kriada otan ide tous vathmous tou)
Nikos was disappointed when he saw his grades.
– Κρυάδα / κρύο ανέκδοτο (kriada / krio anekdoto)= cold joke
An example of a κρυάδα or κρύο ανέκδοτο
Ή έχω καβατζώσει όλους τους αναπτήρες της παρέας ή ο αναπτήρας μου γέννησε…
(I eho kavatzosi olous tous anaptires tis pareas, i o anaptiras mou gennise)
I have either walked off with all my friends’ lighters or my lighter has bred.
4. Κρυουλιάρης, κρυουλιάρα, κρυουλιάρικο (kriouliaris, kriouliara, kriouliariko)= a person who gets easily cold
Είμαι πολύ κρυουλιάρα. Δεν πηγαίνω για μπάνιο πριν από τον Αύγουστο. (Ime poli kriouliara. Den pigeno gia banio prin apo ton Avgousto)
I get easily cold. I don’t go swimming until August.
5. Κρυόκωλος (kriokolos)= cold fish, uncool
Literally it means a person who has a cold ass. It is a very common slang term.
Πρώτη φορά βλέπω τόσους κρυόκωλους μαζεμένους σε ένα πάρτι. Την κάνουμε; (Proti fora vlepo tosous kriokolous mazemenous se ena party. Tin kanoume?)
Ι’ve never seen so many cold people/cold fish in a party. Do you want to dip out?
