Why do you learn Greek? Name a reason Posted by on Jul 12, 2018 in Vocabulary

If you learn Greek and plan to conversations with a native speaker via Skype or one-to-one you should keep in mind that the first questions they will ask you is why you learn Greek and if you have ever been to Greece. In this post, there is a list of phrases that you might use.

Γιατί μαθαίνεις ελληνικά;

Why do you learn Greek?

Γιατί / Because

  • έχω συγγενείς στην Ελλάδα.

I have relatives in Greece.

  • κατάγομαι από την Ελλάδα.

I have origins from Greece.

  • έχω φίλους στην Ελλάδα.

I have friends in Greece.

  • μου αρέσει η γλώσσα.

I like the language.

  • πηγαίνω συχνά στην Ελλάδα και θέλω να μιλάω τη γλώσσα.

I go to Greece often and I want to speak the language.

  • μου αρέσουν οι άνθρωποι και η χώρα.

I like the people and the country.

  • μου αρέσει το ελληνικό φαγητό.

I like Greek food.

  • μου αρέσει η μυθολογία και ο αρχαίος ελληνικός πολιτισμός.

I like mythology and the ancient Greek civilization.

  • θέλω να ζήσω στην Ελλάδα όταν πάρω σύνταξη.

I want to live in Greece when I retire.

  • έχω σπίτι στην Ελλάδα και πηγαίνω κάθε καλοκαίρι.

I have a house in Greece and I go there every summer.

  • ο άντρας μου είναι Έλληνας.

My husband is Greek.

  • η γυναίκα μου είναι Ελληνίδα.

My wife is Greek.

  • πηγαίνω στην Ελλάδα για τη δουλειά μου. (Literally: I go to Greece for my work).
  • θα πάω στην Ελλάδα με ένα πρόγραμμα ανταλλαγής φοιτητών. (Literally: I will go to Greece with a student exchange program).

Δεν έχω ιδιαίτερο λόγο.

I have no particular reason.

Yes in …(year)

  • Ναι, πέρυσι / πρόπερσι.

Yes, last year / two years ago.

  • Όχι, αλλά θέλω πολύ να πάω.

  • Όχι, αλλά ίσως  πάω κάποια μέρα.

No, but I might go some day.
