Γεια σας! The school year has started on the 14^th of September (14 Σεπτεμβρίου). In this post we will see some words and phrases related to the precautions taken due to the rise of the COVID cases (κρούσματα κορωνοϊού) in Greece.

Όλα τα παιδιά άνω των τεσσάρων ετών και οι εκπαιδευτικοί φοράνε μάσκες. Οι μάσκες είναι δωρεάν. All children over four years old and teachers wear masks. The masks are given to the students for free.

Κάθε μαθητής έχει ένα ατομικό παγούρι. Αυτό γίνεται για να μην πίνουν νερό απευθείας από τη βρύση. Each student has a personal vacuum flask. The flasks are given to the students in order to avoid drinking water directly from the tap.

Οι εκδρομές αναβάλλονται. The filed trips have been postponed.

Οι μαθητές βγαίνουν για διάλειμμα στο προαύλιο σε διαφορετικές ώρες. The break between classes takes place at different hours so the students do not stay at the court yard all together.

Αν ένας μαθητής βρεθεί θερικός στον κορωνοϊό, το τμήμα κλείνει. If a student is tested positive for COVID, the class is closed and the student stays home for fourteen days. If the whole school needs to close, there will be distance learning (τηλεκπαίδευση).

In Greece, a large number of primary school students are taken care by their grand parents when their parents are at work. Some children can stay at school longer to do their homework, supervised by a teacher, or to choose to study one of the following topics: English, Visual Arts, Music or Drama (Αγγλικά, Εικαστικά, Μουσική ή Θεατρική Αγωγή). This is called ολοήμερο σχολείο (all-day school). So far, there was a number of prerequisites for a student to be accepted to ολοήμερο σχολείο but this year all students are accepted, in an attempt to protect the elderly from COVID.

We don’t know how the school year will end. Some parents and students follow the instructions given by the Ministry of Education (Υπουργείο Παιδείας) but there are also those who refuse to wear masks (αρνητές της μάσκας). We all hope that the pandemic will not be out of control (εκτός ελέγχου).
