Animals can be sweet, furry, wild  and so on. Can humans be “bear”, fox” or “baboon”? In this post there’s a list of  the most common animal expressions and idioms used when referring to a person. You might also want to check the list of Fish and Seafood idioms.

• Αετός (aetos)= eagle

It can be used to mean very clever,very good at.
Ο Νίκος είναι αετός στα μαθηματικά. (O Neekos eenai aetos sta matheemateeka)
Nikos is a whiz at maths.

• Αλεπού (alepou)= fox

It can be used to mean cunning.
Ο καινούργιος υπάλληλος είναι μεγάλη αλεπού. Είναι μόνο πέντε μήνες στην εταιρία και πήρε προαγωγή.  (O kainourgeeos eepaleelos einai megalee alepou. Eenai mono pente meenes stin etaireea kai peere proagogee)
The new employee is really crafty. He’s been in this company for only five months and he got a promotion.

• Αρκούδα (arkouda)= bear

• Μπαμπουίνος (baouinos)= baboon

Both words can be used to mean  very hairy.
Ακόμα δεν έκανες αποτρίχωση; Πώς θα πας στην παραλία σαν αρκούδα; (Akoma den ekanes apotreehosee? Pos tha pas steen paraleea san arkouda?)
Haven’t you epilated your legs yet? How will you go to the beach? You’re like a bear!
«Καλός ο Πέτρος, ε;» «Άσε μας μωρέ με το μπαμπουίνο, μέχρι και στα αυτιά έχει τρίχες! »  (Kalos o Petros,e? Ase mas more me to babouino, mehree kai sta aftia ehei treehes)
“Peter is cute, isn’t he?” “Give me a break, he’s a baboon, even his ears are hairy!”

• Βόδι (vodee)= ox

It can be used to mean stupid.
Αμάν αυτή η Στέλλα, τίποτα δεν καταλαβαίνει. Σκέτο βόδι είναι. (Aman aftee ee Stella, teepota den katalavainee. Sketo vodee einai)
Stella doesn’t get anything. She’s so dumb.

• Γάτα (gata)= cat  / γατόνι (gatonee)

It can be used to mean very clever. There’s also the expression  γάτα με πέταλα (gata me petala) : in direct translation it means “a cat in horse shoes” (a clever and competent person).
«Δεν καταλαβαίνω αυτή την άσκηση.» «Γιατί δε λες στη Μαρία να σε βοηθήσει; Είναι γάτα στη χημεία.» (Den katalavaino aftee teen askeesee. Giati de les stee Maria na se voeetheesee? Einai gata stee heemeea)
“I don’t understand this exercise.” “Why don’t you ask Maria to help you? She’s  a chemistry whiz.”

• Γορίλας (gorillas)= gorilla

It can be used to mean bodyguard.
O υπουργός μπήκε στην αίθουσα με τους γορίλλες του. (O eepourgos beeke steen aithousa me tous goriles tou)
The minister entered the hall escorted by his bodyguards.

• Δράκος (drakos)= dragon

It can be used to mean serial rapist.
Ο «δράκος» αναγνωρίστηκε από τρεις γυναίκες και συνελήφθη. (O drakos anagnoreesteeke apo trees geenaikes kai seenelifthee)
The rapist was identified by three women and was arrested..

• Κότα (kota)= hen

It can be used to mean coward.
O Μάριος είναι μεγάλη κότα. Δεν είχε το θάρρος να πει ευθέως στη Ρένα ότι δεν ήθελε να την ξαναδεί και απλώς δεν της ξανατηλεφώνησε ποτέ. (O Marios einai megalee kota. Den eehe to tharos na lee eftheos stee Rena otee den eethele na teen xanadee kai aplos den tees xanattelefoneese pote)
Marios is such a coward. He didn’t have the courage to tell directrly to Rena that he didn’t want to see her again, so he just never called her again.

• Κοκοράκι, κοκόρι (kokorakee, kokoree)= rooster

It can be  used to describe a person who gets easily angry and who is ready to fight for no reason.
«Τι έγινε;» «Κανείς δεν ξέρει. Εκεί που καθόμασταν, ο Αντρέας και ο Στέλιος πιάστηκαν σαν τα κοκόρια.» (Ti egeene? Kaness den xeree. Ekee pou kathomastan o Andreas kai o Stelios peeasteekan san ta kokoria)
“What happened?” “Nobody knows. We were just sitting here and sudeenly Andreas and Stelios started fighting like roosters”

 

κοκορεύομαι (kok0revomai)= to brag
Η Άννα κοκορεύεται για τα λεφτά του άντρα της. (Ee Anna kokorevetai gia ta lefta tou antra tees)
Anna is bragging about her husband’s money.

• Κοράκι (korakee)= crow

It can be used to mean funeral director.
Ο άντρας της Άννας έχει λεφτά γιατί είναι κοράκι. Ξέρεις  πόσο πάει η κηδεία σήμερα; (O antras tees Annas ehee lefta giati eenai korakee. Xerees poso paee ee keedeea seemera?)
Anna’s husband makes money because he’s an undertaker. Do you know how much does  a funeral cost nowadays?

• Λαγός (lagos) = hare

Γίνομαι λαγός  (geenomee lagos)=to become a hare (direct translation)
It can be used to mean  to run away.
Μόλις είδε την πρώην του έγινε λαγός. (Molees eede teen proeen tou egeene lagos)
When he saw his ex he ran away.
Βγάζω λαγό (vgazo  lago) = to take out a hare (direct translation)
It can be used to mean to have an unexpected success, to find out something important
Η συνάντηση της Ελένης με τους παλιούς συμμαθητές της έβγαλε λαγό: μία συμμαθήτριά της της ζήτησε να συνεργαστούν. (Ee seenanteesee tees Elenees me tous palious seematheetes tees evgale lago. Mia seematheetria tis tis zeeteese na seenergastoun)
Eleni was very lucky to meet up with her old classmates: one of her classmates asked her to work together.

• Φίδι (feedee)= snake / φίδι κολοβό (feedee kolovo)= tailless snake

It can be used to mean  malicious.
Μην τον εμπιστεύεσαι. Είναι φίδι κολοβό. (Meen ton eebistevesai. Einai feedee kolovo)
Don’t trust him. He’s really malicious.
