Γεια σας και καλό μήνα!

In every language there are words with the same sound but with different meaning.Greek is not an exception. In this post there are ten common homophones (ομόηχες λέξεις) but the list is much bigger.

1. βάζο (το): jar, vase / βάζω: to put

Η μαρμελάδα είναι στο βάζο. The jam is in the jar.

Βάζω το βάζο στο ψυγείο. I am putting the jar in the refrigerator.

2. ετοιμολογία (η): wittiness / ετυμολογία (η): origin of a word (etymology)

Κάνει πάντα τους άλλους να γελάνε με την ετοιμολογία του. He always makes the others laugh with his wittiness.

Ξέρεις την ετοιμολογία της λέξης “άνθρωπος”; Do you know the origin of the word “man”?

3. ευφορία (η): euphoria / εφορία (η): tax office

Το ποτό μού φέρνει ευφορία. Drinking makes me joyful.

Μήπως ξέρετε που βρίσκεται η Εφορία; Do you know where is the tax office?

4. κλείνω: to close / κλίνω: to conjugate

Τι ώρα κλείνει το κατάστημα; What time does the store close?

Ποιος μπορεί να κλίνει αυτό το ρήμα; Who can conjugate this verb?

5. κλήμα: grapevine / κλίμα: climate

Μπορείτε να κλαδέψετε το κλήμα; Can you prune the grapevine?

Το χωριό έχει πολύ καλό κλίμα. The village has very good climate (lit).

6. Κρητικός:Cretan/ κριτικός:reviewer

Ο Γιάννης είναι από το Ηράκλειο. Είναι Κρητικός. Yannis comes from Heraklion. He is Cretan.

Ο Γιάννης είναι κριτικός εστιατορίων. Υannis is a restaurant critic.

7. μηλιά (η): apple tree / μιλιά (η): speech, voice

Έχουν μία μηλιά στην αυλή τους. They have an apple tree in their yard.

Κάθισε εκεί και μη βγάλεις μιλιά! Sit there and keep silent!

8. πιάνο (το): piano / πιάνω: catch, grip

Η Μαρίζα παίζει πιάνο και ο Μάριος παίζει βιολί. Marisa is playing the piano and Marios is playing the violin.

Πιάνω τη μπάλα και με τα δύο χέρια. I am catching the ball with both hands.

9. ποιο: who, what, which / πιο: more

Ποιο είναι εκείνο το αγόρι; Who is that boy?

Ο Παύλος είναι πιο κοντός από την αδερφή του. Pavlos is shorter (more short) than his sister.

10. ψηλός-η-ο: tall / ψιλός-η-ο: thin, fine

Η Αθηνά είναι πολύ ψηλή. Athena is very tall.

Η Αθηνά έχει ψιλή φωνή. Athena has a thin voice.
