Today I will give you two sample dialogs that you may need if you ever visit Greece. You could also give me your suggestions.

Booking a room

You: Καλημέρα! (kaleemera)/ Καλησπέρα (kaleespera)/ Γεία σας!(Gia sas) Good morning! / Good evening! / Hello!
Clerk: Same greeting back, πως μπορώ να σας εξυπηρετήσω ;(pos boro na sas exiepiereteeso) ….,what can I do for you?
You: Θα ήθελα ένα δωμάτιο για δύο άτομα για τρείς ημέρες παρακαλώ (Tha eethela ena domatio gia deeo atoma  gia trees eemeres parakalo) I would like a room for two people for 3 days please.
Clerk: Θέλετε με διπλό κρεβάτι ή δύο μονά;(Thelete me diplo krevati ee deeo mona); Would you like double bed or two twin beds?
You: Με διπλό κρεβάτι παρακαλώ. (Me diplo krevati parakalo) With double bed please.
You: Πόσο θα κοστίσει;(Poso tha kostisei) How much will it cost?
Clerk: Ένα δωμάτιο για δύο με πρωινό κοστίζει 80 Ευρώ την μέρα. (Ena domatio gia deeo me proino kosteezee  80 euro teen mera) A room for two including breakfast costs 80 Euros per day.
You: Εντάξει .(edaxee) Okay.
Clerk: Θέλετε το δωμάτιο από σήμερα; (Thelete to domatio apo seemera) Do you need the room from today?
You: Ναι παρακαλώ.(Nee parakalo) Yes please.
Clerk: Μπορώ  να έχω την ταυτότητα σας παρακαλώ;(Boro na exo teen taftoteeta sas parakalo) May I have your ID please?
You: Φυσικά, ορίστε(feeseeka, oriste) Of course. Here it is.
Clerk: Ορίστε το κλειδί σας. Δωμάτιο διακόσια τέσσερα στον δεύτερο όροφο. (Oriste to kleedee sas. Domatio diakosa tessera ston deftero orofo) Here is you key. Room two hundred four at the second floor.
Clerk: Καλή διαμονή !(Kalh diamonee) Enjoy your stay!

 

 

Eating out

You: Γεία σας!(Gia sas) Hello!
Waiter: Γεία σας! Hello!
You: Θα ήθελα ένα τραπέζι για δυο παρακαλώ.(Tha eethela ena trapezi gia deeo parakalo) I would like a table for two please.
Waiter: Μάλιστα. Σας αρέσει εδώ κύριε;(Malista, sas aresee edo keerie) Certainly. How do you like it here Sir?
You: Εδώ είναι καλά.(Edo eenee kala) Here is good!
You: Θα μπορούσα να έχω έναν κατάλογο;(tha mporousa na eho enan katalogo) May I have a catalogue?
Waiter: Ορίστε. Επιστρέφω σε πέντε λεπτά να πάρω την παραγγελία σας(oriste. Epistrefo se pente lepta na paro teen paragelia sas) Here it is. I will be back in five minutes to take your order.
Waiter: …..Λοιπόν, αποφασίσατε;(Leepon, apofasisate) ….So, have you decided?
You: Ναι. Φέρτε μας μία καλαμαράκια, μία χωριάτικη και δυο πατάτες τηγανητές.(Nee. Ferte mas mia kalamarakia, mia xoriatikee kai deeo patates teeganites) Yes. Bring us one portion of little squid, one Greek salad and two portions of chips.
Waiter: Θέλετε να πιείτε κάτι ;(Thelete na piete kati) Would you like something to drink?
You: Φέρτε μας μισό κιλό ρετσίνα (Ferte mas miso kilo retsina ) Bring us half a kilo of retsina.

    Another good one and very useful! Maybe you can do one on shopping/buying clothes or buying a ferry ticket to visit the islands from Piraeus 🙂

    Very good. Thanks. One small correction in the English translation: In a restaurant you ask for a menu never a catalogue. Catalogue has a different meaning in English
