Γεια σας! Today, we will see the different meanings and uses of the words κάθε, καθένας, καθεμία, καθένα. They are all important words to know and make part of our everyday life vocabulary. In some cases, there is no accurate translation of the sentences, so I have translated the meaning. 

 

Κάθε

It is used as an adjective and it means every, each or all. Sometimes, it can be used with an article. It is invariable.

Examples:

1. Κάθε μέρα ξυπνάω στις 8.

Every day I wake up at 8.

2.Κάθε άνθρωπος / Ο κάθε άνθρωπος έχει ανάγκη από ύπνο.

Everyone needs sleep.

3.Η Λένα τρώει μία φέτα τυρί σε κάθε γεύμα.

Lena eats one slice of cheese with each meal.

4.Τον βλέπουμε κάθε καλοκαίρι.

We see him every summer.

5.Στο ψυγείο τους έχουν μαγνητάκια από κάθε χώρα που επισκέφτηκαν.

On their refrigerator they have magnets from all the countries they have visited.

It also means at regular intervals

Examples:

1.“Κάθε πότε πηγαίνεις στην βιβλιοθήκη;” “Κάθε τρεις μέρες.”

“How frequently do you go to the library?|” “Every three days.”

2. Πληρωνόμαστε κάθε πρώτη του μήνα.

We get paid the first day of every month.

Expressions:

1.κάθε λίγο και λιγάκι

It means every now and then and has a negative connotation.

Κάθε λίγο και λιγάκι με παίρνει τηλέφωνο και μου κάνει παράπονα για τον άντρα της.

Every now and then, she calls me and complains about her husband.

2.Κάθε τόσο

It means every so often.

“Βλέπεις καθόλου τον Αλέξανδρο;” “Ναι, περνάει από ‘δω κάθε τόσο.”

“Do you ever see Alexandros?” “Yes, he calls in every so often.”

 

Ο καθένας, η καθεμία / καθεμιά, το καθένα

 

It is an indefinite pronoun. It means everyone, each one, anyone and all. It has three genders, cases and no plural.

Examples:

1.Μην ακούς τι σου λέει ο καθένας.

Don’t give attention to what other people say.

2.Δεν μπορώ να ακούω τα προβλήματα του καθενός.

I can’t stand listening to other people’s problems.

3.“Άκουσες τι είπε για σένα η Νίτσα;” “Όχι. Δεν με ενδιαφέρει τι λέει η καθεμιά για μένα.”

“Did you hear what Nitsa said about you?” “No, I’m not interested in the other women’s opinion about me.”

4.Όταν σκουπίσετε τα πιάτα, να βάλετε το καθένα στην θέση του, σας παρακαλώ.

When you dry the dishes, put each one at its place, please.

They also mean each one separately.

Examples:

1.Το κάθε παιδί τρώει μία σοκολάτα.

Each child is eating one chocolate.

2.Θα πάρετε εκατό ευρώ ο καθένας.

You will get 100 euros each.

3.Η θεία σας έφερε στην καθεμιά ένα φόρεμα και ένα φουλάρι.

Your aunt brought each one of you one dress and one scarf.

Note the use of από:

1.Τα παιδιά τρώνε από μία σοκολάτα.

2.Θα πάρετε από εκατό ευρώ / από εκατό ευρώ ο καθένας.

3.Η θείας σας σάς έφερε από ένα φόρεμα κι ένα φουλάρι.

4.“Πόσα γλυκά μπορούμε να πάρουμε;” “Μπορείτε να πάρετε από δύο, αλλά όχι περισσότερα, γιατί δεν θα φτάσουν για τους καλεσμένους.”
