Greeks don’t read as they used to do in the past but there is still a great number of people who visit the libraries frequently. The libraries are usually municipal and anyone can get a card after filling in an application form and showing an ID. Usually, this is a free process. Readers have also access to University Libraries or to libraries of private institutions, such as the Thervantes of the French Institution, after paying for a subscription.

In this post, there are three dialogues that might be helpful to a librarian. There will be more dialogues in the following post.

• Dialogue 1: Getting a library card

Διάλογος 1: Βγάζοντας κάρτα μέλους

 

Librarian: Hello.

Βιβλιοθηκάριος: Γεια σας. (Gia sas).

Patron: Hi, I would like to check out this book.

Επισκέπτης: Γεια σας, θα ήθελα να δανειστώ αυτό το βιβλίο. (Gia sas, tha ithela na danisto afto to vivlio).

Librarian: Sure! Do you have a library card?

Βιβλιοθηκάριος: Βεβαίως! Έχετε κάρτα μέλους; (Veveos. Ehete karta melous?)

Patron: No.

Επισκέπτης: Όχι. (Ohi.)

Librarian: Okay. To get one, I’ll need you to fill in this application. I’ll also need to see a form of ID.

Librarian: Great, I’ve checked out the book to you.

Patron: When is it due?

Επισκέπτης: Πότε πρέπει να το επιστρέψω; (Pote prepi na to epistrepso?)

Librarian: You need to return the book within 14 days.

Βιβλιοθηκάριος: Πρέπει να το επιστρέψετε μέσα σε δεκατέσσερις μέρες. (Prepei na to epistrepsete mesa se dekateseris meres.)

Patron: Can I renew it after two weeks?

Librarian: Yes! Just bring it back and we can renew it as long as no one has it on hold.

Patron: Hi! I’d like to check out Wild but I can’t seem to find it on the shelf.

Επισκέπτης: Γεια σας! Θα ήθελα να δανειστώ το Wild αλλά δεν το βρίσκω στα ράφια. (Geia sas! Tha ithela na danisto to Wild alla den to vrisko sta rafia).

Librarian: Okay, just one minute while I check our catalog.

Βιβλιοθηκάριος: Εντάξει, μισό λεπτό να κοιτάξω τον κατάλογο. (Entaxi, miso lepto na kitaxo ton katalogo).

Patron: Thank you.

Επισκέπτης: Ευχαριστώ. (Efharisto).

Librarian: I’m sorry, that book has been checked out until next week. Would you like to put it on hold?

Βιβλιοθηκάριος: Λυπάμαι, αλλά το βιβλίο είναι δανεισμένο μέχρι την επόμενη εβδομάδα. Θέλετε να το κρατήσουμε; (Lipame ala to vivlio ine danismeno mehri tin epomeni evdomada. Thelete na to kratisoume?)

Librarian: Of course! What kinds of books do you like?

Patron: I really enjoy biographies, but I also read lots of contemporary non-fiction.

Patron: Hello. Do you have a computer available?

Librarian: Yes, you can use any of the computers that are not being used.

Βιβλιοθηκάριος: Ναι, μπορείτε να χρησιμοποιήσετε έναν από τους υπολογιστές που δεν χρησιμοποιούνται. (Ne, borite na hrisimopiisete enan apo tous ipologistes pou den hrisimopoiounte).

Patron: Okay, how do I sign in?

Librarian: Absolutely. The first two pages you print are free, but every page after that will cost 15 cents.
