Γεια σας! Καλή χρονιά! Some people like to learn vocabulary organizing the words in specific topics or concepts. Today, we will see four verbs which are related to water or liquids and we will explore their meaning. Coincidentally, these verbs start by -β!

 

 

#1. βουτάω= to dive, to immerse, to dip

Αόριστος (Past Simple): βούτηξα

Examples:

Ο Γιάννης βούτηξε στο ποτάμι,αν και το νερό ήταν πολύ κρύο. Yannis dived into the river although the water was very cold.

Βουτήξτε τα λαχανικά στο μείγμα και βάλτε τα στο τηγάνι. Dip the vegetables in the mixture and put them in the oven.

 

#2. βυθίζω, βυθίζομαι= to sink, to stick, to be absorbed (metaphorically), to snatch

Αόριστος: βύθισα, βυθίστηκα

Examples:

Το πλοίο βυθίστηκε στα ανοιχτά της Ικαρίας. The ship sank off the coast of Ikaria.

Η Μαρία ήταν βυθισμένη στις σκέψεις της και δεν με άκουσε που ερχόμουν. Maria was absorbed by her own thoughts and did not hear me coming.

Ο Πέτρος βύθισε το μαχαίρι στο καρπούζι. Petros stuck the knife in the watermelon.

Η Ελένη βούτηξε το ακριβό στιλό της δασκάλας. Eleni snatched the teacher’s expensive pen.

 

#3. βρέχω, βρέχομαι= to wet, to get wet

Αόριστος: έβρεξα, βράχηκα

Βράχηκαν τα ρούχα μου και θελω να αλλάξω. My clothes got wet and I want to change.

*βρέχει= it rains

Αόριστος: έβρεξε

Δε θα βγούμε σήμερα. Βρέχει πολύ. We will not go out today. It’s raining heavily.

 

#4. βουλιάζω = to sink, to get stuck, to be overwhelmed

Αόριστος: βούλιαξα

Το πλοίο βούλιαξε γιατί χτύπησε σε έναν ύφαλο. The ship sank cause it hit a reef.

Το ποδήλατο βούλιαξε στη λάσπη. The bike got stuck in the mud.

Από τότε που έχασε τον γιο της έχει βουλιάξει στη δυστυχία. Since she lost her son she has sank into misery.
