Sfentoni Cave (Το σπήλαιο του Σφεντόνη) Posted by on Jan 20, 2012 in Uncategorized

Let’s take a break from learning and go a short trip to the island of Crete (Κρήτη) to explore the Sfentoni cave.

The cave Sfenton is considered to be one of the five best caves in Greece and the best in Crete. It is located in the village of Zoniana (Ζωνανιά). The quaint village of Zoniana is situated 630 meters up on Psiloritis (Ψηλορήτης) mountain in the Mylopotamos (Μυλοπόταμος) region of the Rethymnon (Ρέθυμνο) prefecture.

The cave occupies an area of 3000 square meters and it is the most impressive cave in Greece. Within 270 meters of the route, visitors can admire how nature with much patience improvised and created water droplets, an aesthetic spectacle. Massive columns create huge compartments inside the cave. Innumerable varied and colorful stalactites and stalagmites decorate the halls of the cave. In many places, there are water basins and “cave pearls”. Particularly impressive is the glow from the tiny crystals of calcium carbonate.

The cave named after a man called Sfentonis. Sfentonis was a guerilla who had found refuge in the cave. One day, while he was grilling at the entrance of the cave, a boy approached him and asked him for food.  Sfentonis with the fear of being betrayed by the boy, he kicked him so hard with his boot that he killed him.

The legend of the cave

According to a legend, a beautiful fairy was hiding in the dark cave. The fairy use to come out at the same time each day to go to the nearby source of drinking water. A shepherd had seen her many times, but in every attempt to approach her, she was running to hide back into the cave. The desire and curiosity made him to lurk outside the cave. As soon as she appeared, the shepherd shoot a rock with his slingshot and injured her.The wounded fairy had managed to run and hide inside the cave, leaving at the entrance a blood stained handkerchief.

According to another version of this legend, the shepherd approached the wounded fairy and fascinated by her beauty tried to kiss her. The fairy pushed him back and promised that if he would not hurt her, she would give him a rod with silk that never ends. The shepherd did not resist and eventually kissed her in spite of her objections. The fairy cried, cursed him and his whole family to have trembling hands.

The skeleton of a child

The bones of a child have been found in this cave a decade ago. The skeleton was covered by calcareous material, so it had remained for centuries in the cave. There is no information about the death of this child. Maybe he entered the cave but never got out, trapped in the labyrinth of cave. Rumors want to be the skeleton of the boy who has been killed by Sfentonis.
