Γεια σας! This post is about the Greek words for already, for, since, just, yet and still. Read the following examples to see the different use of these words. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment!

Example 1

ήδη and κιόλας can be used to mean already.Κιόλας is colloquial and more emphatic. Ακόμη / ακόμα can be used to mean yet or still.

A: Που είναι ο Στάθης; Είναι  3:00! Έπρεπε να ήταν ήδη εδώ!
B: Πήγε κιόλας 3:00;
A: Ναι.
B: Αφού δεν ήρθε ακόμη, μάλλον δεν θα έρθει. Πάμε χωρίς αυτόν.
A: Πάμε.

A: Where is Stathis? It’s  3:00 o’clock. He should have been here!
B: Is it 3:00 already? (B is surprised because they thought it was earlier.)
A: Yes.
B: Since he’s not here yet, he probably won’t come. Let’s go without him.
A: Let’s go.

Example 2

A: Γεια σου Β, τι κάνεις;
Β: Καλά, ευχαριστώ. Πάω στη δουλειά.
Α: Βρήκες κιόλας δουλειά; Μπράβο!
Β: Ναι, δουλεύω ήδη μία εβδομάδα!
Α: Είσαι ευχαριστημένη;
Β: Δεν ξέρω ακόμη. Είναι πολύ νωρίς.Προς το παρόν, δεν έχω πρόβλημα.Εσύ, δουλεύεις ακόμα στο ίδιο σχολείο;

A: Hi B, how are you?
B: I’m well, thanks! I go to work.
A: Have you already find a job? Great! (A thinks it is too soon for B to have found a job)
B: Yes, I am already working for a week.
A: Are you happy?
B: I don’t know yet. It’s too soon. I don’t have a problem, for the moment. And you, do you still work at the same school?

Example 3

Ακόμα/ακόμη can be used to mean also.

Α: Πάω στο μανάβη.
Β: Τι θα πάρεις;
Α: Ντομάτες, μπανάνες…
Β: Ντομάτες; Έχουμε ντομάτες στο ψυγείο.
Α: Τις φάγαμε όλες.
Β: Κιόλας; Πριν από τρεις μέρες τις αγόρασα!
Α: Χρειαζόμαστε ακόμα σταφύλια, πατάτες και αγγούρια.

A: I’m going at the greengrocer’s.
B: What will you get?
A: Tomatos, bananas…
B: Tomatos? There are tomatos in the fridge.
A: We ate them all.
B: Already? I bought them three days ago. (B could have said Τις φάγαμε ήδη;/ Have we already eaten them? but the use of κιόλας makes the phrase more emphatic)
A: We also need grapes, potatoes and cucumbers.

Example 4

Εδώ και can be used to mean for and από can be used to mean since.

A: Από πότε μένεις στην Κρήτη;
Β: Μένω στην Κρήτη εδώ και δύο χρόνια αλλά στο Ρέθυμνο μένω από τον Ιανουάριο.

A: How long (since when) do you live in Crete?
B: I live in Crete for two years but I live in Rethymno since January.

Example 5

Στις can be used to indicate a precise date.

Α: Πότε ήρθες στην Κρήτη;
Β: Ήρθα στις 14 Μαρτίου του 2015.
Α: Μένεις ήδη δύο χρόνια εδώ. Για αυτό μιλάς τόσο καλά ελληνικά λοιπόν!

A: When did you come to Crete?
B: I came on the 14th of March 2015.
A: You already live two years here. So, that’s why you speak Greek so well!

Example 6

Μόλις can be used to mean just.

Α: Γεια σας. Είναι εδώ ο Ίβαρ; Σας μίλησε για την υπόθεσή μου;
Β: Ναι,είναι εδώ, αλλά δεν μιλήσαμε ακόμα γιατί μόλις ήρθε. Περάστε μέσα, αν θέλετε.
A: Ευχαριστώ.

A: Hello. Is Ivar here? Did he talk to you about my case?
B: Υes, he’s here but we haven’t talked yet because he just came. Come on in, if you like.
A: Thank you.

Example 7

Ακόμα/ακόμη can be used to mean still.

Μα τι κάνεις; Είναι πέντε η ώρα και είσαι ακόμη εδώ; Θα χάσεις το αεροπλάνο!Έπρεπε να είχες φύγει εδώ και μισή ώρα!
What are you doing? It’s five o’clock and you’re still here? You will miss your flight! You should have gone half an hour ago!
