What should I wear today? Posted by on Dec 31, 2012 in Grammar, Learning Hebrew

How many times have you looked in your closet, looked over the dozens of items of clothing and thought “I have nothing to wear!” So you go to any one of these places to see what you can get:

חנות כולבו – Department store

קניונ – Shopping mall

מידרחוב – flea market

When you get to the store you want, you’ll need to learn more than one way to say “to wear”, depending on what you’re going to buy. In Hebrew, the word for “to dress oneself” is להתלבש. The word for “clothing” is בגדים. So you need to לבשׂ בגדים

Okay, I mentioned there’s more than one way to say “wear” in Hebrew. Let’s take a look at them:

Looking for a hat? The word you’re looking for is לחבוש meaning, “to wear a hat”. To use this verb, you take off the lamed (ל) at the beginning of the word and conjugate the verb accordingly. For example:

He wears a hat – הוא חובש כובע

She wears a hat – היא חובשת כובע

They wear a hat (masc) – הם לובשים כובע

They wear a hat (fem) – הם לובשים כובע

to wear shoes – לנעול

He wears shoes – הוא לובש נעליים

She wears shoes – היא לובשת נעליים

They wear shoes (masc) – הם לובשים נעליים

They wear shoes (fem) – הם לובשים נעליים

There’s other verbs to indicate what you’re wearing such as

to wear socks – ללבוש גרביים

to wear glasses – להרכיב משקפים

to wear a belt – ללבוש חגורה

to wear jewelry/a watch – לענוד תכשיטים
