Posted by on Jan 14, 2017 in Hindi Language

Vyaayaam, kasrat, aur khel kood. Exercise and sports.

(Somvaar se meri tabiyat theek nahin thii … zukaam, bukhaar, vagairah. Is kaaran main sum-aye par blog likh nahin saki. Kshama chaahti hoon.

I have been under the weather since Monday … cold, fever, etc. Hence, I couldn’t write my post in a timely manner. I’m sorry for the delay.

The new year brings with it a flurry of resolutions संकल्प (sun-culp), mostly promises to exercise कसरत करना (kasrat karna) more and eat healthy food. Indians play many of the sports खेल कूद (khel kood) that people play around the world. However, India has it’s own store of traditional पारंपरिक (parum-parik) games and sports that are as enjoyable to play as they are to watch देखना (daykhna) as प्रेक्षक spectators (prek-shuck) .

When I was growing up, space wasn’t at such a premium as it is today. Playgrounds मैदान (mai-daan) and open spaces were large and unhindered. लगोरी (lagori) was an energetic game that would keep us engaged for hours. Two teams would spar by trying to knock down a pile of stones with a tennis-ball sized rubber ball. खो-खो (kho-kho), a tag sport, and कबड्डी (kabaddi) an ancient Indian contact sport are also extremely fast-paced and energetic. Watch a kabaddi match to see how the game is played.

Conversation
Let’s listen to the following conversation between a couple. The wife wants to go out for a movie. The husband prefers to first hit the gym and get some exercise. The wife agrees to get some exercise at the same time by walking around a nearby ground. After their exercise, they decide to go watch the movie दंगल Dangal. (Dangal literally means wrestling match.)

Suno, aaj chutti hai. Cinema dekhne chalte hain?
Listen, it’s a holiday today. Shall we go watch a movie?
Haan, lekin aaj mujhe gym jaake kasrat bhi karna hai.
Yes, but I want to go to the gym and work out, too.
Aaj rehne do na. Kal chale jaao.
Let it be today. Go tomorrow.
Nahin, nahin. Kasrat sehad ke liye zaroori hai. Main aaj bhi jaaoonga, aur kal bhi.
No, no. Exercise is important for good health. I will go today and tomorrow, too.
Theek hai. Main bhi maidan ke chakkar lagaakar aati hoon. Phir cinema chalte hain.
OK. I will also walk around the ground. We can go to the cinema later.
Kaunsi picture dekhenge?
Which movie are we going to watch?
Dangal dekhne chalein?
Shall we watch Dangal?
