Conversation in Hindi – Visit to Indian Sweets Shop Posted by on Sep 15, 2013 in Hindi Language

George is on vacation to India and while roaming in the city, he finds some Indian sweets shop. The shapes, colors and smile of those sweets are tempting him to try some of these traditional Indian sweets. He  approaches the shops only to find that the shop owner or anyone nearby don’t speaks English.

Hindi word for traditional Indian sweets is मिठाई (Mithai) and verb to purchase/buy is called खरीदना (Kharidna).

As George have already learned some Hindi before coming to India, let’s see how George managed his conversation in Hindi with the sweets shop owner. Words in brackets (if any) are usually omitted in conversation as it is obvious from the context.

George to Shop Owner:
Hello / Hello (more formal) Sir!
नमस्ते!
Namaste / Namskar!

Shop Owner to George:
नमस्ते!
Namaste / Namskar!
Hello / Hello!

George to Shop Owner:
I would like to have some sweets.
मुझे कुछ मिठाई खरीदनी हैं।
Mujhe kuch mithai kharidni hai?

Shop Owner to George:
Tell me, which sweet would you like to have?
बोलिए, कौनसी मिठाई खरीदनी है आपको?
Boliye, kaunsi mithai kharidni hai aapko?

George to Shop Owner:
How much for this one?
यह वाली कितने की है?
yeh wali kitne ki hai?

Shop Owner to George:
This one costs 400 rupees per kilo.
यह वाली  ४०० रूपये किलो है।
yeh wali char sau rupey kilo hai.
George to Shop Owner:
Okay, give me 500 gram from this one.
ठीक है, यह वाली ५०० ग्राम दे दो।
thik hai, yeh vali panch sau gram de do.

Shop Owner to George:
Would you like any other sweets?
आपको और कौनसी मिठाई चाहिए?
aapko aur kaunsi mithai chahiye?

George to Shop Owner:
How much for this one?
यह कितने रूपये किलो है?
yeh kitne rupey kilo hai?
Shop Owner to George:
This one is 200 rupees per kilo.
यह वाली २०० रूपये किलो है।
yeh vaali do sau rupey kilo hai.

George to Shop Owner:
Okay, give me 500 gram from this.
ठीक है, यह वाली ५०० ग्राम दे दो।
thik hai, yeh vaali panch sau gram de do.

George to Shop Owner:
How much for these?
कितने रुपए हुए दोनों के?
kitne rupey hue dono ke?

Shop Owner to George:
Six hundred rupees.
छ: सौ रुपए।
Ch sau rupey.

George to Shop Owner:
Thank you!
धन्यवाद!
Dhaniyavad!

Shop Owner to George:
Thank you!
धन्यवाद!
Dhaniyavad!
