The month of April is a time when several Indian New Years are celebrated. For instance, Navreh is a New Years celebration that is based on the Indian lunar calendar. This New Years is especially regarded as an important celebration in the Kashmir region. The Kashmir New Year coincides with the onset of spring, so it is a double joyous occasion. In addition, Navreh is considered a sacred day and religious preparations are made like in this video:

In Manipur, New Year’s Day is called Cheiraoba. It’s a day when people say goodbye to the old year and welcome the New Year with a feast. In the villages of Manipur, it is a local tradition to climb the hills with one’s family. The people of Manipur believe that the deities assemble on the hills on Cheiraoba. Prayers and offerings are made to the deities in return for a prosperous and long life. Here is a video detailing the event:

Finally, Gudi Padwa is New Year’s Day in Maharashtra. Houses are cleaned, people wear new clothes and make special dishes to prepare for the New Year. It’s a day where the triumph of good over evil is celebrated. In particular, Rama’s victory over Ravanna is celebrated. There are also special rangolis, or a decorative type of sand art on the doorstep of each household. A parade is usually performed in the streets with the flag of Brahma’s flag; which represents the defeat of evil.
