Indian Railways of the Past Posted by on Jul 24, 2011 in Uncategorized

One of the great ways to journey through various parts of India is to do it through the many railways in India. For example the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a wonderful way to see the outdoors and get a feel for the local communities that the railway is a part of. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is nicknamed the “Toy Train” because it uses a vintage railway and train to transport its passengers.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a World Heritage Site in India. It still uses steam locomotive trains and riding it reminds the passenger of the old days when India was run by these types of locomotive trains. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway passes through some of the most beautiful scenery in India. In the warmer seasons, when the outdoor views are breathtaking, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway is fully occupied so book your tickets in advance!

Another Indian railway known for its inspiring scenery is the Kalka Shimla Railway. Many of the routes and stops of the Kalka Shimla Railway are in a mountainous area. It’s especially interesting when you can look out of the window of the locomotive and look to see a steep side of a mountain. That means that this railway is crucial because without it people would not be able to move with such ease.

Matheran Hill Railway is a railway that is run as a tourist railway. That means that the people running the railways are doing it voluntarily or at least with little profit. Tourist railways like the Matheran Hill Railway serve to preserve the past and what it would have looked like if the passenger looked out the window of the train. Taking a ride on these types of railways is like taking a step back in time when India’ history was rapidly changing.
