A reader of a previous blog requested some clarification on lagana/lagaana. Here are some sentences that use the two words and describe different contexts/situations.
बारिश के इस मौसम में बहुत ठण्ड लगती है।
Baarish ke is mausam mein bahut thand lagti hai.
In this rainy weather, one feels very cold.
ठण्ड लगना (inf. thand lagna) = to feel cold
क्रिकेट खेलते वक़्त बंटी को पैर में ज़ोर से चोट लग गयी।
Cricket khelte waqt Bunty ko pair mein zor se chot lag gayi.
While playing cricket, Bunty hurt himself hard on his foot.=))
चोट लगना (inf. choat lagna) = to get hurt; चोट = hurt/injury
वकील ने पूछा, “जज साहब, क्या आपको यह सबूत जायज़ लगता है?”
Vaqeel ne poocha, “Judge-saab, kya aapko yeh saboot jaayaz lagta hai?”
The lawyer asked, “Honorable judge, does this evidence appear valid to you?
जायज़ लगना (inf. jaaiz lagna) = to appear valid; सबूत (saboot) = evidence/proof
भूतों का फिल्म देखते वक़्त सीमा बोली, “मुझे बहुत डर लग रहा है। “
Bhooton ka film dekhte waqt, Seema boli “mujhe bahut darr lag raha hai.”
While watching a ghost/horror film, Seema said “I am feeling very scared.
डर लगना (inf. dar lagna) = to be scared/feel scared; भूत (bhoot) = ghost
परीक्षा के लिए पढाई न कर पाने के डर से राहुल अपने दोस्त को बोला “यार, आज तो वाट लगने वाली है। “
Pareeksha ke liye padhai na kar paane ke darr se Rahul apne dost ko bola “Yaar, aaj to vaat lagne wali hai.”
Afraid that he was not prepared well enough for his exams, Rahul said to his friend, “Dude, I’m going to be in big trouble today!”
वाट लगना (inf. vaat lagna) = to be in trouble (colloquial/slang); परीक्षा (pareeksha) = exams/test
लगाना (lagaana)
पिंटू की शैतानी देखकर दादाजी ने उसे ज़ोर से थप्पड़ लगाने की धमकी दी।
Pintu ki shaitaani dekhkar dadaji ne use zor se thappad lagaane ki dhamki di.
Looking at Pintu’s mischief, grandpa threatened to give him a tight slap.
थप्पड़ लगाना = (inf. thappad lagaana) = to place/give a slap; थप्पड़ (thappad) = slap (noun); शैतानी (shaitaani) = mischief
आज मेरी माँ अपने बालों में मेहंदी लगाएगी।
Aaj meri maa apne baalon mein mehendi lagayegi.
Today my mom will apply henna to her hair.
मेहंदी लगाना = (inf. mehandi lagaana) = to apply henna; मेहंदी (mehandi) = henna; बाल (baal) = hair
गोआ की सैर की यादें ताज़ा रखने के लिए सीमा ने दीवार पर ढेर सारी तसवीरें लगायी।
Goa ki sair ki yaadein taaza rakhne keliye Seema ne deewar par dher saari tasweerein lagayi.
In order to keep the memories of her Goa trip fresh, Seema hung up many photos of the trip on her wall.
तसवीरें लगाना = (inf. tasveeren lagaana) = to hang up pictures/photos; तसवीर (tasveer) = pictures/photos; सैर (sair) = trip; ताज़ा (taazaa) = fresh; ढेर सारी (dher saari) = many
रामायण कथा में हनुमान ने लंका में आग लगायी।
Ramayan katha mein Hanuman ne Lanka mein aag lagayi.
In the story of the Ramayan, Hanuman set Lanka on fire.
आग लगाना (inf. aag lagaana) = to set fire; आग (aag) = fire; कथा (kathaa) = story
नेता ने वोट के लिए अनपढ़ गाँववालों को चूना लगाया।
Neta ne vote keliye anpadh gaon-walon ko choona lagaya.
In order to get votes, the politician fooled/duped the illiterate villagers.
चूना लगाना (inf. choona lagaana) = to make a fool of someone/to dupe someone (colloquial/idiomatic); चूना (choona) = chalk/plaster; नेता (nayta) = politician/leader; अनपढ़ (anpadh) = illiterate; गाँववाले (gaanvvaale) = villagers
