One of the major religions in India is Buddhism. There are numerous monasteries in India, some of which are very famous.
The Tashiding Monastery is located in Sikkim. There are several legends about how the Tashiding Monastery was founded. In all the legends the site of the Monastery was viewed as a holy site. The Tashiding Monastery is located on top of a hill and also includes a kitchen, dorms, and an area for instruction.
Hemis Monastery is located in Jammu and Kashmir. There was some controversy about the Hemis Monastery because it is the supposed place where the work of a Russian journalist is hidden. This journalist claimed that Jesus traveled to India and allegedly the monks at the monastery denied the existence of the text.
Tawang Monastery is located in Arunachal Pradesh and is one of the largest Buddhist monasteries. The Monastery has a large library that preserves a collection of sacred texts. It also houses a school that teaches the monks arithmetic, Hindi, English and the sacred texts. Tawang Monastery is also famous for its statue of Buddha, which is cast in gold and is eight meters tall.
Tabo Monastery is located in Himachal Pradesh and is on top of a mountain that is a thousand meters high. It is one of the monasteries that allow both monks and nuns to worship in the monastery, but in separate quarters. It is a cold and rocky area, but then again, this is a monastery and the focus should be on worship. So, it’s actually a great place for meditation.
