Phrases in Hindi are called “पदबंद” (Padband). These are the group of the words which function as a single unit in the syntax of a sentence.
These unit may emphasis a noun, pronoun, adjective, verb or adverb in a sentence.
In Hindi, phrases are of 5 types.
1. संज्ञा पदबंद (Sangya Padband – Noun Phrase)
When a phrase is used as a noun in a sentence then it is called Sangya Padband.
Examples:
यमुना का पानी गन्दा है. – Water of Yamuna (a river) is dirty.
मोहन काले रंग की टोपी पहनी हैं. – Mohan is wearing a black hat.
2. सर्वनाम पदबंद (Sarvname Padband – Pronoun Phrase)
When a phrase is used as a pronoun in a sentence then it is called Sarvname Padband.
Examples:
अमेरिका से से आये हुए लोगों में कुछ मेरे मित्र हैं. – From people that came from America, some of them are my friend.
लन्दन में रहने वाला वह आ गया हैं. – He, who live in London, has arrived.
3. विशेषण पदबंद (Visheshan Padband – Adjective Phrase)
When a phrase is used as an adjective in a sentence then it is called Visheshan Padband.
Examples:
भारत की राजधानी दिल्ली में बहुत सी एतिहासिक इमारतें हैं. – Delhi, the capital of India, has many historical buildings.
दिनभर परिश्रम करने वाला छात्र क्या कभी असफल हो सकता हैं? – He, who is working hard, could possible fail?
4. क्रिया पदबंद (Kriya Padband – Verb Phrase)
When a phrase is used as a verb in a sentence then it is called Kriya Padband.
Examples:
विद्यालय के छात्र पढ़ रहे होंगे. – Students of school must be learning.
मुझ से अब यह काम नहीं करा जा रहा. – I am not able to do this work anymore.
5. क्रियाविशेषण पदबंद (Kriyavisheshan Padband – Adverb Phrase)
When a phrase is used as an adverb in a sentence then it is called Kriyavisheshan Padband.
Examples:
बस बड़ी धीमी गति से चल रही थी. – Bus was running very slowly.
मेरे आने के बाद ही उसने काम किया. – Only after I came, he did the work.
