Wealthiest Temples in India Posted by on Jul 4, 2011 in Uncategorized

Recently there was news about a vast storage of treasure that was discovered in the vaults of the Padmanabhaswamny Temple in the city of Thiruvananthapuram in the state of Kerala. The treasure is reported to be around 500 billion to 1 trillion rupees (11.5 billion – 22.3 billion). This makes the Padmanabhaswamny Temple the richest temple in India. It’s been suggested that the Travancore Royal Family hid their treasures over a period of many years in the secret vault.

Before the treasure was discovered at Padmanabhaswamny Temple, the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in the city of Tirupati in the state of Andhra Pradesh was reportedly considered to be the richest temple in India. Although the Triumala Venkateswara Temple no longer holds the title of being the wealthiest temple in India, it’ll probably still be one of the most visited temples in India. However, for the Padmanabhaswamny Temple, it’s rate of pilgrimage visits will probably increase.

Another wealthy temple in India is the Harmandir Sahib, or what is also called the “Golden Temple”. The Harmandir Sahib is a temple open to people of all walks of life. You don’t even have to be a Sikh to visit the Harmandir Sahib. All creeds and nationalities are welcome, which means that there are many opportunities for international tourists from faraway lands to visit the Harmandir Sahib. Lots of tourists = lots of money for the Harmandir Sahib, so it’s a wealthy temple indeed.
