“Yang” is used in the simple meaning of who / which / that or when used to say ‘the person who (m)…’ or ‘the thing that…’. “Yang” is preceded by a noun (the one underlined).

Examples:

Orang yang saya lihat di jalan kemarin adalah Pak Joko.

The person whom I saw on the street yesterday was Pak Joko.

Paket yang baru datang itu dari kakak sulungnya di Bandung.

The package that just came in was from his/her oldest sibling in Jakarta.

Murid yang duduk di depan kelas itu sudah pandai berbahasa Indonesia.

The student who sits in front of the class is good at speaking Indonesian.

Saya mau mampir ke rumah teman yang tinggal di Surabaya.

I want to drop by my friend who lives in Bandung.

Grammar Practice

Combine the following sentences into one sentence using ‘yang’.

Example: Murid itu berkursus di TL. Murid itu sudah pandai berbahasa Indonesia.
Murid yang berkursus di TL itu sudah pandai berbahasa Indonesia.

The student who studies at Transparent Language is good at speaking Indonesian.

Kakek memberikan buah jeruk kepada cucunya. Cucunya berbaju hijau.

“Yang”is used to ask ‘which (one)?’

To ask ‘which?’ or ‘which one?’, we can say yang mana?

Examples:

Q: sepatu Anda yang mana? Or Yang mana sepatu Anda?

Which one is your shoes?

A: Yang merah.

The red one.

Q: Anda mau pakai gaun yang mana?

Which dress do you want to wear?

A: Yang putih.

The white one.

NOTE

“Yang” before mana is usually omitted if the following phrase begins with “yang”, although it can be retained:

Examples:

Makanan mana yang enak?

Which food that is delicious?

Makanan yang mana yang enak?

Which food that is delicious?
