There are some verbs in English that are used both with the gerund (ing form) or the infinitive with to. Let’s see how they work.

Forget

He forgot meeting her and asked her name all over again. He forgot that he had met her. (Ele se esqueceu de tê-la conhecido e perguntou seu nome novamente.)
He forgot to meet her at the station and she was really angry at him. He was supposed to meet her but he forgot all about it. (Ele se esqueceu de ir encontrá-la na estação e ela ficou muito brava com ele.)

Go on

She went on writing children’s books for a living. She continued doing that. (Ela continuou escrevendo livros para crianças para viver)
She went on to write children’s books after 10 years of writing short stories for that big magazine. She stopped writing short stories and started writing children’s books instead. (Ela começou a escrever livros para crianças depois de escrever contos para aquela grande revista.)

Quit

Mark quit working at the library. He doesn’t work at the library anymore. (Mark parou de trabalhar na biblioteca)
Mark quit to work at the library. He was working somewhere but resigned to work at the library. (Mark pediu as contas para trabalhar na biblioteca)

Remember

I don’t remember meeting him. I don’t remember that I have met him sometime. (Não me lembro de tê-lo conhecido.)
Did you remember to pick up the kids at school? You were supposed to do something and I’m asking if you remembered to do it. (Você se lembrou de buscar as crianças na escola?)

Stop

Sheila stopped smoking. She doesn’t smoke anymore. (Sheila parou de fumar.)
Sheila stopped to smoke a cigarette. She was doing something else but stopped that activity to smoke. (Sheila parou para fumar um cigarro.)

Try

Did you ever try skiing? Did you ever make an experiment of skiing? (Você já tentou esquiar? – teste, experiência)
I tried to ski but it was too hard, I couldn’t do it. I made an effort to ski, but I couldn’t. (Eu tentei esquiar, mas era muito difícil, não consegui. – indica um esforço)
