Estão erradas as pessoas que dizem que inglês e português são línguas totalmente diferentes. Por razões históricas e etimológicas compartilhamos várias expressões com a estrutural igual ou similar.

Vejamos, por exemplo, a palavra opportunity (oportunidade).

Podemos tanto agarrar a oportunidade, ou seize, grab the opportunity quanto deixar a oportunidade escapar, let an opportunity escape or get away. Se deixamos a oportunidade escapar das nossas mãos, we let it slip through our hands.

Às vezes perdemos uma oportunidade, we lose or miss an opportunity. Também desperdiçamos uma oportunidade, we waste an opportunity, que muitas vezes é uma oportunidade de ouro, a golden opportunity, que não são fáceis de encontrar, some opportunities are not easy to find.

Por descuido, às vezes deixamos a oportunidade passar, pass us by ou simplesmente escapar, get away. Temos de go after the opportunity (ir atrás da oportunidade) pois freqüentemente oportunidades batem à nossa porta, opportunities knock on our doors.

So are you going to grab this opportunity to learn English with us or are you going to let it escape, slip through your hands?

You run the risk of losing this opportunity so are you sure you’re going to waste it? Go after it because when you least expect it, it’s going to come knocking on your door!
