Hey, there! How’s it going?

Hoje vou explicar o uso da palavra quite, em inglês. Ela quer dizer um tanto, bastante, bem ou até completamente. O grau de intensidade de quite é “menos que muito e mais que um pouco”. Vejamos alguns exemplos:

It’s quite cold today. – Está bem frio hoje.
She’s become quite famous after that movie. – Ela ficou bastante famosa depois daquele filme.
The drugstore is not far; actually, it’s quite near. – A farmácia não fica longe; na verdade, fica bem perto.

Obs. Com este sentido, podemos também usar a palavra pretty.

It’s pretty cold today. – Está bem frio hoje.
She’s become pretty famous after that movie. – Ela ficou bastante famosa depois daquele filme.
The drugstore is not far; actually, it’s pretty near. – A farmácia não fica longe; na verdade, fica bem perto.

Quando quite é usado com um adjetivo e um substantivo, colocamos os artigos a ou an:

They live in quite an old house. – Eles moram numa casa bem velha.
That was quite a rude thing to say. – Foi uma grosseria e tanto dizer aquilo.
She has quite a good voice for singing. – Ela tem uma voz e tanto para cantar.
I had quite a busy day today. – Tive um dia bem corrido hoje.

Quando usamos pretty como nos exemplos acima, há um mudança:

They live in a pretty old house.
That was a pretty rude thing to say.

Mais exemplos com quite.

I didn’t expect him to come, it was quite a surprise. – Eu não esperava que ele viesse, foi uma surpresa e tanto.
There were quite a lot of books in his bedroom. – Havia realmente muitos livros no quarto dele.
I quite enjoy reading at night. – Gosto bastante de ler à noite.

Quite também quer dizer completamente e é usado com algumas combinações de adjetivos:

sure, certain, wrong, right, true, safe, clear, obvious, different, unnecessary, incredible, extraordinary, amazing, impossible

Are you sure? – Tem certeza?
Quite sure. – Completamente.

She’s quite right about it. -Ela está completamente certa sobre isso.
You’re quite wrong about it. – Você está redondamente enganado.
That was quite unnecessary, wasn’t it? – Isso foi bem desnecessário, não foi?
I couldn’t believe it! It was quite incredible! – Eu não conseguia acreditar! Foi incrível!

Também usamos a negativa not quite (não completamente):

I don’t quite understand why she left. – Não entendo bem porque ela foi embora.
I hadn’t quite finished lunch when they arrived. – Eu não tinha nem terminado de almoçar quando eles chegaram.
Are you ready yet? Not quite. – Já está pronto? Não exatamente.
