Hey, what’s up?

Há coisas que os livros didáticos não trazem e não trarão e algumas expressões bem comuns do dia a dia são umas delas.

Elas aparecem em filmes, músicas, seriados, vídeos do Youtube e é muito importane conhecê-las para depois poder usá-las corretamente e impressionar as pessoas com seu inglês.

Vamos aprender quatro expressões comuns em português com o verbo “pegar”.

01. pegar, no sentido de entrar na moda, ficar famoso e popular – to catch on

That new game caught on real fast with young kids. – Esse novo jogou pegou rápido com a meninada.
Do you think this new hairstyle will catch on? -Você acha que este novo penteado vai pegar?
That new Taio Cruz song will definitely catch on in the summer. – A nova música do Taio Cruz vai pegar no verão.

02. pegar no pé de alguém, importunar, encher a paciência de alguém – to pick on someone

I wish you would stop picking on me all the time! – Gostaria que você parasse de pegar no meu pé o tempo todo!

Why is he always picking on her? – Por que ele está sempre pegando no pé dela?

03. pegar o jeito de algo, aprender as manhas – to get the hang of something

When I first started to type, I was terrible at it. But now I’ve gotten the hang of it I can type really fast. – Quando eu comecei a digitar, eu era terrível. Mas agora peguei o jeito e digito bem rápido.
I’d never used that software, but soon I got the hang of it. – Eu nunca tinha usado aquele programa, mas logo peguei o jeito.
I wonder when I’ll get the hang of this thing. – Quando será que vou pegar o jeito disso?

04. pegar alguém no flagra/em flagrante – to catch someone red-handed, to catch somebody in the act

Jack was caught red-handed cheating on the exam. – Jack foi pego em flagrante colando na prova.
They were caught red-handed in that embezzlement scheme. – Eles foram pegos em flagrante naquele esquema de desfalque.
His wife caught him in the act trying to make a pass at his secretary. – Sua esposa o pegou no flagra tentando passar uma cantada na secretária.
