As preposições, em todas as línguas, não são fáceis de usar e uma dica muito importante é aprendê-las contextualizadas. Um dos casos que mais apresenta dificuldades é o uso de in e at e hoje trago a diferença entre as locuções at the end e in the end.

At the end

Usamos at the end, que quer dizer “no fim/final de algo”, quando algo acaba.

• at the end of the movie – no final do filme
• at the end of the month – no final do mês
• at the end of March – no final de março
• at the end of the course – no final do curso
• at the end of the year – no final do ano
• at the end of the game – no final do jogo
• at the end of the concert – no final do show

O oposto de at the end of (no fim/final de) é at the beginning of (no início/começo de).

In the end

In the end quer dizer finalmente.

• I had a lot of problems with my car. I sold it in the end. – Tive muitos problemas com meu carro. Finalmente o vendi. / Acabei vendendo.
• The teacher yelled at the students then stormed out of the classroom in the end. – A professora gritou com os alunos e finalmente saiu da sala correndo.
• He got more and more fed up with his job. He resigned in the end. – Ele ficou cada vez mais cheio do seu trabalho. Pediu as contas finalmente.
• I tried to learn Russian but it was too difficult. I gave up in the finally. – Tentei aprender russo mas era muito difícil. Desisti finalmente.
